Templeman is a community of New-Wes-Valley in Newfoundland, Canada, located on the north side of Bonavista Bay just south of Cape Freels and north of Wesleyville. Templeman has a shallow and rocky harbour, and can only accommodate small boats. [1]

History

This fishing community was originally named Fox Cove and was settled in the 1870s. Settlers that came to Templeman were from nearby islands such as Bennett's Island, Cobbler's Island, and Pinchard's Island. Some of the family names that came from those areas, to Templeman, are Green, Tuff, Howell, and Vincent. The decision to settle in Templeman was most likely due to the Labrador Fishery.

Templeman first appears in the 1884 Census with a population of 75. By 1901 the population had increased to 225 people. However, with the collapse of the Labrador fishery in the 1930s, Templeman's population suffered a sharp decline. In 1921 there were 51 families living in Templeman, by 1971 there were only 55 people. As time passed, Templeman's population was able to rebound just slightly as people from Wesleyville moved there. Templeman became part of Wesleyville in 1992. [2] The community is now a part of the town of New-Wes-Valley.

Church history

When the population was 75 in 1884, 55 of those people were Methodist, the others were Church of England. In 1911, 212 of the 225 people in Templeman were Methodist. In 1900 a school house was built in the settlement which also served as a chapel for church services; however, it was destroyed by fire in 1916. In 1915 a Methodist church was built which was used for a school as well. A new church was built in Templeman in the 1960s. [3]

It first appears in the 1857 Census as Apsey Cove with a population of thirteen, all dependent on the salmon fishery. By the 1870s more families moved to Aspen Cove for the cod and lobster fisheries. In the 1921 census the population had reached 104 and the economy had changed from salmon, fur, and agriculture to cod, lobster, and lumbering.

Safe Harbour is an abandoned outport on the northeast coast of Newfoundland in the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador. Settled by 1870, it was abandoned in 1955.

Valleyfield, Newfoundland is a village and was served by the C.N.R. It joined the Rural District of Badger's Quay-Valleyfield-Pool's Island in April 1980 until 1992 when the District merged with other nearby towns to form New-Wes-Valley. Valleyfield has a good harbour, and is the location of the Beothic Fisheries fish plant.

In 1901 the population had slightly increased to 168 with 89 Church of England members, 65 Methodists, and 14 members of the Salvation Army. In 1992 Pound Cove joined with the town of Wesleyville.

Noggin Cove is located west of Carmanville on the south of Hamilton Sound and it is said to be named after Noggin Island, about 5 km off its eastern point.

The community of Lumsden, formerly known as Cat Harbour, is located on the Straight Shore of Newfoundland and Labrador near communities such as Musgrave Harbour and Newtown. Lumsden was formerly made up of two settlements, Lumsden North on the tip of a sandy peninsula and Lumsden South on the main road. Although the harbour in Lumsden is not ideal because it is not sheltered, Lumsden has excellent fishing grounds.

Swain's Island, Newfoundland, is actually a group of eight islands on the north side of Bonavista Bay, southeast of Wesleyville. All of these islands once had inhabitants but eventually all of them were resettled, mostly to Wesleyville.

Located on the northwest side of Bonavista Bay, Newfoundland at the mouth of the Indian Bay inlet is a small island named Silver Fox Island that was once inhabited. It is about 3 km in length and about 3 km from Fair Island. The first settling began at Warren's Harbour on the southern side of the island.
