Martín Miguel Vassallo Argüello is a retired professional male tennis player from Argentina. His career-high ATP singles ranking is World No. 47, achieved in April 2009 shortly after reaching the semifinals of Acapulco.
Boris Becker defeated Ivan Lendl in the final, 7–6(7–2), 1–6, 6–3, 7–6(7–4) to win the men's singles tennis title at the 1989 US Open. Becker saved a match point en route to the title, against Derrick Rostagno in the second round. This was Lendl's eighth consecutive singles final appearance at the US Open; he became the first man in the Open Era to finish runner-up five times at the same major.
Jimmy Connors defeated Björn Borg in the final, 6–4, 6–2, 6–2 to win the men's singles tennis title at the 1978 US Open. The final was watched by a sell-out crowd of 19,537 spectators.
Two-time defending champion John McEnroe defeated Björn Borg in a rematch of the previous year's final, 4–6, 6–2, 6–4, 6–3 to win the men's singles tennis title at the 1981 US Open. It was his third US Open singles title and fourth major singles title overall. The final would be the last major match of Borg's career, due to his later retirement from the sport.

Martina Navratilova defeated Helena Suková in the final, 6–3, 6–2 to win the women's singles tennis title at the 1986 US Open. It was her third US Open singles title and 15th major singles title overall. Navratilova became the first woman in the Open Era to win a major after saving match points en route, saving three against Steffi Graf in the semifinals.
