Hobart is the capital and most populous city of the Australian island state of Tasmania. Home to almost half of all Tasmanians,it is the southernmost and least-populated Australian state capital city,and second-smallest if territories are taken into account,before Darwin,Northern Territory. Hobart is located in Tasmania's south-east on the estuary of the River Derwent,making it the most southern of Australia's capital cities. Following decriminalisation,social and political attitudes in the state rapidly shifted in favour of LGBT rights ahead of national trends with strong anti-LGBT discrimination laws passed in 1999,and the first state relationship registration scheme to include same-sex couples introduced in 2003. In 2019,Tasmania passed and implemented the world's most progressive gender-optional birth certificate laws.
