The 2004 Summer Paralympics, officially known as the Games of the XII Paralympics, were a international summer multi-parasport event for athletes with disabilities governed by the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) held in Athens, Greece from 17 to 28 September 2004. Greece hosted a Paralympic Games for the first time, and it was also the 12th Paralympic Games in history. A total of 3,806 athletes representing 136 National Paralympic Committees (NPC) participated, and 17 NPCs made their Paralympic debuts in Athens. The Games featured 519 events in 19 sports across 20 disciplines, including the Paralympic debut of football 5-a-side.
Iraq first participated at the Olympic Games in 1948. It was absent from the 1952 Summer Olympics and boycotted the 1956 games over opposition to the Suez Crisis. Iraq returned to win a Bronze medal at the 1960 Summer Olympics in Rome. After participating in the next three games, it did not appear in the 1972 and 1976 games to boycott apartheid South Africa. Iraq is one of the non-African countries that joined the 1976 boycott, the others being Afghanistan, Albania, Burma (Myanmar), Guyana, Sri Lanka and Syria. Since 1980, Iraq has appeared in every game.
Iraq competed in the 2008 Summer Olympics, held in Beijing, China, from August 8 to August 24, 2008. As of late July, seven Iraqis—two rowers, a weightlifter, a sprinter, a discus thrower, a judoka and an archer—had qualified to compete in seven events in five sports at the Beijing Olympics, and twenty have qualified to take part in the Beijing Paralympics.
Iraq sent a delegation to compete at the 2008 Summer Paralympics in Beijing. Twenty Iraqis qualified to compete in the Games, in fields including powerlifting, athletics, and volleyball.
The United States sent a delegation to compete at the 2008 Summer Paralympics in Beijing, China. A total of 213 U.S. competitors took part in 18 sports; the only 2 sports Americans did not compete in were soccer 5-a-side and 7-a-side. The American delegation included 16 former members of the U.S. military, including 3 veterans of the Iraq War. Among them were shot putter Scott Winkler, who was paralyzed in an accident in Iraq, and swimmer Melissa Stockwell, a former United States Army officer who lost her left leg to a roadside bomb in the war.
Iraq made its Paralympic Games début at the 1992 Summer Paralympics in Barcelona. It has competed in every edition of the Summer Paralympics since then, but never in the Winter Paralympics. Iraqi Paralympians have won a total of 18 medals: three gold, seven silver and eight bronze.
Guinea made its Paralympic Games début at the 2004 Summer Paralympics in Athens, sending a single representative to compete in athletics. He took part in two events, and did not win a medal. Barry was, again, Guinea's sole representative at the 2008 Summer Paralympics in Beijing. Entering only one race on that occasion, he was a non-starter. He remains the only person to have represented Guinea at the Paralympic Games.
Madagascar made its Paralympic Games début at the 2000 Summer Paralympics in Sydney. Its sole representative, Aina Onja, was a blind sprinter who ran the men's 100m sprint in the T11 category. His time of 13.98 was the slowest in the heats, and he did not advance to the semi-finals.
Mali made its Paralympic Games début at the 2000 Summer Paralympics in Sydney. The country sent only one athlete, who competed in powerlifting. He did not win a medal. One of nineteen powerlifters in the men's up to 75 kg category, he lifted 130 kg, placing him last of the seventeen athletes who successfully lifted a weight.

He won three medals: the silver medal in the men's 56 kg event in 2008, the silver medal in the men's 72 kg event in 2016 and the bronze medal in the men's 80 kg event in 2024.
Faris Saadoon Abed Al-Ageeli is an Iraqi Paralympic powerlifter. He represented Iraq at the 2004 Summer Paralympics held in Athens, Greece and he won the gold medal in the men's +100 kg event.
Ammar Ali is an Iraqi wheelchair fencer. He represented Iraq at the Summer Paralympics in 2012, 2016, 2020 and 2024. He won the silver medal in the men's épée B event in 2016 and a silver medal at the 2024 games in the épée team event.
Dato' Syed Abu Hussin Hafiz bin Syed Abdul Fasal (Jawi سيد أبو حسين بن حفيظ سيد عبدالفصل; is a Malaysian politician who has served as the Member of Parliament for Bukit Gantang since May 2018. He served as Chairman of the Fisheries Development Authority of Malaysia from May 2020 to December 2022. He was a member of the Malaysian United Indigenous Party, a component party of the Perikatan Nasional coalition and was also a member of the United Malays National Organisation, a component party of the Barisan Nasional coalition. Currently, he is an independent politician since his BERSATU membership ended on 12 June 2024.
