Thalhath Ibrahim Kaleyfaanu is a Maldivian military officer and former Minister of Defence and National Security (2011-2012).
Kaleyfaanu joined the National Security Service in 1989. At the time of joining,he was enlisted in national security with a rank of private,and then lance corporal,corporal,and sergeant until he was promoted to the rank of staff sergeant and warrant officer in grade 1. Prior to his retirement in 2006 from the service as a lieutenant,he was the first lieutenant at the National Security Service as well as the Maldives National Defence Force. [2]
Kaleyfaanu was charged in 2015–2016 by the Criminal Court of Maldives for his alleged role in terrorism and arbitrary arrest of Criminal Court Chief Justice Abdulla Mohamed in 2012. The Supreme Court of the Maldives issued a 10-year jail sentence for Kaleyfaanu,however Kaleyfaanu filed a review request for his conviction,which later in 2018 was provisionally accepted by the Supreme Court. A court-martial is a military court or a trial conducted in such a court. A court-martial is empowered to determine the guilt of members of the armed forces subject to military law,and,if the defendant is found guilty,to decide upon punishment. In addition,courts-martial may be used to try prisoners of war for war crimes. The Geneva Conventions require that POWs who are on trial for war crimes be subject to the same procedures as would be the holding military's own forces. Finally,courts-martial can be convened for other purposes,such as dealing with violations of martial law,and can involve civilian defendants.

Mohamed Nasheed GCSK,also known as Anni,is a Maldivian politician and activist who served as president of the Maldives from 2008 until his resignation in 2012. A founding member of the Maldivian Democratic Party,he subsequently served as the 19th speaker of the People's Majlis from May 2019 until his resignation in November 2023. He is the first democratically elected president of the Maldives and the only president to resign from office. He is currently a member of The Democrats.

He first became the Defense Minister on 8 February 2012 under the presidency of Dr. Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik. He last served as the Administrative Officer of the Integrated Headquarters of Maldives National Defense Force. He retired from active service on 15 January 2011.
Husnu Al Suood born in Meedhoo is a Justice of the Supreme Court of the Republic of Maldives since 8 December 2019. He was the Attorney General of the Maldives from June 2009 to August 2010. He served as the Chief Judge of the Civil Court and as a member of the Judicial Service Commission of Maldives. He also served as a member of the National Human Rights Commission of the Maldives from 2003 to 2005. As a member of the Special Majlis,Suood participated in drafting the current constitution of the Republic of Maldives.
Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom is a Maldivian politician who served as president of the Maldives from 2013 to 2018.
The 2011 Helmand Province killing was the manslaughter of a wounded Taliban insurgent by Alexander Blackman,which occurred on 15 September 2011. Three Royal Marines,known during their trial as Marines A,B,and C,were anonymously tried by court martial. On 8 November 2013,Marines B and C were acquitted,but Blackman was initially found guilty of murder of the Afghan insurgent,in contravention of section 42 of the Armed Forces Act 2006. This made him the first British soldier to be convicted of a battlefield murder whilst serving abroad since the Second World War.

Maafushi Prison is a prison in Maafushi on Kaafu Atoll in the Maldives,18 miles (29 km) south of the capital,Malé. It is the largest prison on the islands and has held numerous political prisoners over the years,including former presidents like Mohamed Nasheed and Abdulla Yameen.
A political crisis in the Maldives intensified on after President Abdulla Yameen decided to disobey the Supreme Court order to release 9 political prisoners and reinstating 12 parliament members which will give the opposition (MDP) control of the chamber and potentially paving the way for Yameen's impeachment.
