The Seven Habits of Highly Effective Teens is a 1998 bestselling self-help book written by Sean Covey, [1] the son of Stephen Covey. [2] [3] The book was published on October 9, 1998 through Touchstone Books and is largely based on The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People. [4] In 1999 Covey released a companion book entitled Daily Reflections For Highly Effective Teens.

In 2000, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens was named as one of the YALSA's "Popular Paperbacks for Young Adults". [5]

Synopsis

In the book Covey discusses how teenagers can become more independent and effective by following seven basic habits. [6] The habits range from being proactive in every aspect of one's life to planning and prioritizing one's daily life and responsibilities. [7] [8]

Reception

Reception for the book has been positive, [9] with some schools including the text in their lesson plans. [10] [11] [12] [13] A reviewer for the New Straits Times commented that the book's writing was "fun and lively" and called it a "fruitful read". [14] AudioFile gave the audiobook a positive review, citing Covey's narration as a highlight. [15] The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens has also been praised by several psychologists, although according to the Handbook of Self-Help Therapies the book has not been thoroughly tested as a part of a treatment plan. The 3rd Alternative: Solving Life's Most Difficult Problems, published in 2011, is a self-help book by Stephen Covey, also the author of The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People. In it, he takes a more detailed look at habit six from that book, "synergize". Co-author Breck England stated that The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People leads up to The 3rd Alternative. The book focuses on a process of conflict resolution that Covey said is distinct from compromise. It gives details and real-world examples and ends with two chapters explaining that the 3rd Alternative is "a way of life".

Popular Paperbacks for Young Adults was an annual list of popular books geared toward young adult readers, collated by the Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA), which was published from 1988 to 2017. The aim of the list was "to encourage young adults to read for pleasure by presenting to them lists of popular or topical titles which are widely available in paperback and which represent a broad variety of accessible themes and genres". Unlike other lists published by the American Library Association and its subsidiaries, books on the list did not have to be published recently. Researchers, librarians, and educators have used the list to better understand books popular amongst young adults.
