The Beechfields Record Label was an American independent not-for-profit musician's cooperative record label, from Baltimore, Maryland, noted for an artist-centered approach to releasing records. [1]
The philosophy that defined the Beechfields was developed by Michael Nestor, at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County in 2000, and the label was officially started in Baltimore in 2003, while Nestor was at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. [2] The Beechfields was designed as a reaction to the suppression of underground music by both major and independent labels. The musical and artistic outlook of the label was based on Virginia label Simple Machines, founded by Jenny Toomey. In 2004, Michael Nestor was joined by local Baltimore musician Austin Stahl, and both Nestor and Stahl produced, or played on the majority of the label's early releases. [1] [3] Originally centering on music traditionally categorized as "lo-fi indie pop," the Beechfields began releasing well produced indie records in 2005, which gained the label local and national notoriety. [4] The Beechfields used that new platform to extend from releasing quality music to teaching musicians how to produce and assemble quality records on their own. In a 2011 interview with Splice Today , Nestor notes "I look back and I'm proud, knowing that many of the things people love about our local scene, and many of the bands they like, are there because of the hard work of myself, my friends, and other like-minded people." [5] Nestor has given a number of lectures and symposia on starting an artist-centered approach to releasing records. [6]
The City Paper notes the Beechfields Record Label "seemed to grow from just another Baltimore indie imprint with a couple bands producing the bulk of its discography to a fully formed label." [7] The label was largely active from 2003 to 2011, and had a substantial impact on the Baltimore indie music scene in the early to mid 2000s through a large catalog of releases from bands like Among Wolves, the Jennifers, Small Sur, Private Eleanor and the Seldon Plan. [5] [8] During its tenure, the Beechfields worked with bands outside of Maryland. However, most of the releases by the label kept a strong Baltimore-centered identity, supporting that music scene. Solid State Records is a Christian record label, an imprint of Tooth & Nail Records. Unlike Tooth & Nail, Solid State signs hardcore punk and heavy metal bands. Like Tooth & Nail, Solid State is primarily a Christian label. Facedown Records is a Christian rock record label based in Fallbrook, California that is devoted to hardcore punk and metalcore bands with a few death metal acts such as Immortal Souls and Indwelling. Founded by No Innocent Victim drummer Jason Dunn, the label started small with a number of 7" record releases by Overcome, Dodgin Bullets, and Born Blind. As the label grew, it was able to sign artists for full album deals. xDISCIPLEx and the Deal, who were both popular in the Christian and secular scenes, released material on Facedown, as well as Figure Four, One-21, and Point of Recognition. The Beechfields Records version was released as a limited edition translucent red 12" record with additional bonus tracks in 2012.The album features Michael Nestor on vocals and guitars, David Hirner on Bass, Chris Ehrich on guitars, and Frank Corl on Percussion. The record was produced by Frank Marchand and is the final full-length record by The Seldon Plan.
That Time You Dreamed is an EP from The Seldon Plan. The record features Michael Nestor on guitars, vocals and keyboards, Frank Corl on percussion, and Kresimir Tokic on bass, replacing founding bassist David Hirner. The Big Takeover named the record a top 10 and wrote, "Their brisk indie pop and angular post-rock has given way to languid, hazy dreampop/shoegaze..." The slower music, and "hazy, dreamy guitarwork" is departure from previous Seldon Plan work. Independent Clauses writes that the songs on this EP, "...are consistently welcoming..." and compares That Time You Dreamed to Copeland.
