The Brightlights are a four-piece British indie rock band from Grimsby in North East Lincolnshire. They released their debut single, "Inspired By", on 5 November 2007. The single was produced by Feeder frontman Grant Nicholas.
The band have cited Arctic Monkeys, Morning Runner, Razorlight, Coldplay, The Kooks and Oasis as their influences - with Channel 4 Music describing them as "explosive melodic rock with a dark edge." [1] They have been compared to the American indie rock band Kings of Leon. [2]
They appeared on the V Festival's "Road to V" competition in the summer of 2007. [3] They subsequently won the competition along with Ipswich band Rosalita. [4] They went on to appear regularly on Freshly Squeezed & Channel 4 Music with Alexa Chung & Rick Edwards.
In September 2007, The Guardian newspaper featured them as their 'New Band of the Day'. [5]
The Brightlights were the first established band signed to Distiller Records, a label owned by Samuel Dyson, son of James Dyson. [6] They released their debut single, "Inspired By", on 7" vinyl and download on 5 November 2007. Reviews were generally favourable. [7] [8] [9] The video for the single was filmed in the band's hometown of Grimsby on the eastern coast of England. It was directed by Jay Burridge who has also worked on a video for Hot Chip. It features Shane Meadows cult drama This Is England 's star Thomas Turgoose. [10]
Prolific DJs such as Zane Lowe, Colin Murray and Steve Lamacq have positively commented on the band's releases. Their first single entered the UK Indie Chart at No. 2 on 11 November 2007.[ citation needed ]
The Brightlights second single was titled "3". It reached the top 5 in the BBC Indie Charts beating both Kings Of Leon & Arctic Monkeys on weekly vinyl sales. [11] The single was produced by Steve Power who is most well known for producing songs for Kylie Minogue, Robbie Williams and Blur at the Tower of Power Studios in London.[ citation needed ]
The Brightlights released their long lost album titled Make It Last 12 years after it was recorded. It was released on Supa Soka Records on 7 August 2020. The album was released by surprise without any single releases or pre promotion. Make It Last is one of the most unique indie releases of the decade, released as a debut album 12 years after the band disbanded, under the circumstances of the worldwide Pandemic COVID19. The album received positive reviews, often described as a "nostalgia album" and one independent review viewed this as being " one of the last great live albums to have been written" though, streams and sales were generally low and it didn't manage to repeat the successes of earlier releases. In 2007, they became the poster boys of Richard Branson's new television project Virgin 1 and played at the launch party at his home in Oxfordshire with support from the band The Enemy. [5]
In early 2008, the band began recording their first album at The Crypt Studio in London with engineer and producer Matt Sime, who is most well known for producing Feeder's albums. That album has only recently been released 12 years after it was recorded.
The Brightlights were on the verge of becoming one of the biggest exports in modern UK guitar music and were one of the last bands to be offered a large five album deal advance by Jive/Zomba Records, before the label collapsed in 2011. However, the band were advised by management to hold out for bigger and better offers and in turn the deal was declined. Fashion writers Company Magazine printed a large two page article which predicted the band would become one of the biggest bands in the UK by 2012. Unfortunately, with the rapid descent of Indie guitar music, in conjunction with the decline of their most popular fanbase platform Myspace, the band were short lived and disbanded in late 2008. The band have since released interviews stating that silent struggles with mental health and well being amongst band members ultimately attributed to the bands demise and they dedicated their album to anybody who suffers mental health conditions. The Brightlights represent one of the quickest and most un-documented rise & fall stories in popular band culture of the early noughties.
There were rumours circulating on social media networks that the band may be organising a comeback gig. On 18 November 2022, The Brighlights reformed for a special gig at KU Bar Stockton as part of their 20th Birthday celebrations.
Leon Blanchard & James Buxton went on to form a 4 piece band Venacava [13] which were active between 2008 - 2010.
Adam Featherstone & Luke Parker went on to form a five piece band called Old Arcadians [14] which were active between 2008 - 2010.
Other associated bands include Casanova, [15] Little Fears [16] & The Chaplins [17] which all consisted of The Brightlights band members.
Supergrass are an English rock band formed in 1993 in Oxford. For the majority of the band's tenure, the line-up consisted of brothers Gaz and Rob Coombes (keyboards), Mick Quinn and Danny Goffey. Originally a three-piece, the band was officially joined by Rob Coombes in 2002.
Therapy? are a Northern Irish rock band from Larne, formed in 1989 by guitarist-vocalist Andy Cairns and drummer-vocalist Fyfe Ewing. Therapy? recorded their first demo with Cairns filling in on bass guitar. To complete the lineup, the band recruited Larne bassist Michael McKeegan. The band signed with major label A&M Records in 1992, for which they released four albums, most notably Troublegum in 1994 and Infernal Love in 1995. Ewing's departure in early 1996 preceded the arrivals of his replacement Graham Hopkins and Martin McCarrick on cello and guitar. Neil Cooper replaced Hopkins on drums in 2002. The band have remained a three-piece since the departure of McCarrick in 2004.
Kings of Leon is an American rock band formed in Mount Juliet, Tennessee, in 1999. The band includes brothers Caleb, Nathan, and Jared Followill and their cousin Matthew Followill.
Echo Park is the third studio album by Welsh rock band Feeder. It was their first album since 1999's Yesterday Went Too Soon. The album was recorded at Great Linford Manor in Milton Keynes during most of 2000 and was produced by Gil Norton.

Pushing the Senses is the fifth studio album by Welsh rock band Feeder. It was released on Echo, Liberation Music and PIAS on 31 January 2005 in the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand and Europe, while being released on Pony Canyon in Japan on 10 February 2005. Despite mixed reviews, the album was a commercial success, in which it was a top five album in Feeder's native United Kingdom, and its lead single "Tumble and Fall" was a top five single. This made the album Feeder's most successful in terms of peak chart position, but did not experience the same chart longevity as presuccessor Comfort in Sound, which spent 36 weeks on the UK top 75 chart in comparison to the 15 weeks spent by Pushing the Senses.
Kaiser Chiefs are an English indie rock band from Leeds who originally formed in 1996 as Runston Parva, before reforming as Parva in 2000, and releasing one studio album, 22, in 2003, before renaming and establishing themselves in their current name that same year. Since their formation, the band has consisted of lead vocalist Ricky Wilson, guitarist Andrew "Whitey" White, bassist Simon Rix, keyboardist Nick "Peanut" Baines and since 2013 drummer Vijay Mistry, who replaced founding drummer Nick Hodgson following his departure from the band in late 2012.
The Cribs are a British indie rock band originally from Wakefield, West Yorkshire, that formed in 2001. The band consists of twins Gary and Ryan Jarman and their younger brother Ross Jarman. They were subsequently joined by ex-Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr, who was an official member of the group from 2008 until 2011.
"Buck Rogers" is a song by Welsh rock band Feeder. It was the first single to be taken from their third studio album, Echo Park (2001), and was released on The Echo Label. The track reached number five on the UK Singles Chart after its release on 8 January 2001. The group had originally not intended the track to be one of theirs, as frontman and main songwriter of the band Grant Nicholas originally wrote "Buck Rogers" for SR-71, only for producer Gil Norton and A&R staff of Echo to convince the band they could have a hit with it themselves, after hearing a demo recorded by Feeder. It continues to be played on UK alternative radio stations as a classic hit of its genre. The single has been certified platinum in the United Kingdom for sales and streaming figures exceeding 600,000 units.
The Boyfriends were an English indie four-piece musical group from London, England, who consisted of Martin Wallace on vocals, Richard Adderley on guitar, David Barnett on bass and Paddy Pulzer on drums. Adderley and Pulzer had previous played together in Jack. They received press coverage in The Guardian The Independent and the NME which claimed the band was Morrissey's favourite new band.
Foals are a British rock band formed in Oxford in 2005. The band's current line-up consists of Greek-born lead vocalist and guitarist Yannis Philippakis, drummer and percussionist Jack Bevan, rhythm guitarist Jimmy Smith and bassist Walter Gervers. They are currently signed to Warner Records, and have released seven studio albums to date: Antidotes (2008), Total Life Forever (2010), Holy Fire (2013), What Went Down (2015), and Everything Not Saved Will Be Lost – Part 1 & 2 (2019) and their most recent, Life Is Yours (2022). They have also released one video album, six extended plays and thirty-five singles.
Rosalita were a five-piece English post-punk revival band from East Anglia. The band formed in May 2005, and have toured continuously since early 2006. Rosalita play jerky indie pop "with the aim of making people dance". Their songs include pop culture references to things as diverse as Art Attack and Pop-Tarts. The band cite Talking Heads, The Stranglers, The Jam and Devo as influences. They have played as supporting act to Towers of London, Jack Peñate, Air Traffic and The Sounds among others.
Vampire Weekend is an American rock band formed in New York City in 2006 and currently signed to Columbia Records. The band was formed by lead vocalist and guitarist Ezra Koenig, multi-instrumentalist Rostam Batmanglij, drummer Chris Tomson, and bassist Chris Baio. Batmanglij departed the group in early 2016 but has continued to occasionally contribute to subsequent albums as a songwriter, producer, and musician.
Glasvegas are a Scottish indie rock band from Glasgow. The band consists of James Allan (vocals), Rab Allan and Paul Donoghue, with Swedish drummer Jonna Löfgren joining the group in 2010 until her departure in 2020. Their platinum-selling debut album Glasvegas released in September 2008 was well received by critics and reached No. 2 in the UK Albums Chart. It was nominated for the Mercury Music Prize in September 2009. The album went on to enjoy further critical and commercial success in North America and in Sweden. On 1 December 2008, less than three months after the release of their debut album the band released the mini-album A Snowflake Fell , a 6 track Christmas EP, which was recorded in Transylvania.

White Lies are an English Indie rock band from Ealing, London. Formerly known as Fear of Flying, the core band members are Harry McVeigh, Charles Cave, and Jack Lawrence-Brown (drums). The band performs live as a four-piece, when they are joined by Tommy Bowen.

Sparrow and the Workshop were an indie three-piece based in Glasgow, consisting of the Belfast-born, Chicago-raised Jill O'Sullivan, Welshman Nick Packer and Scotsman Gregor Donaldson. The band's debut album Crystals Fall was released by Distiller Records in 2010 to critical acclaim, with the likes of Drowned in Sound and Clash Magazine awarding the album 9/10. The band was notable for their use of harmonies and bastardized instruments/FX pedals and they have been compared to bands as varied as Jefferson Airplane, Talking Heads and Black Sabbath.
The Snuts are a Scottish indie rock band formed in 2015, originating from West Lothian, Scotland. They have performed across the United Kingdom and Ireland. The band consists of Jack Cochrane, Joe McGillveray (guitar), Callum '29' Wilson (bass) and Jordan 'Joko' Mackay (drums) and was formed when the members were in school.
