The Convocation (formerly The Convocation Of...) is an American psychedelic rock band from Baltimore, Maryland.

Psychedelic rock is a diverse style of rock music inspired, influenced, or representative of psychedelic culture, which is centred around perception-altering hallucinogenic drugs. The music is intended to replicate and enhance the mind-altering experiences of psychedelic drugs, most notably LSD. Many psychedelic groups differ in style, and the label is often applied spuriously.

Baltimore is the most populous city in the U.S. state of Maryland, as well as the 30th most populous city in the United States, with a population of 602,495 in 2018 and also the largest such independent city in the country. Baltimore was established by the Constitution of Maryland as an independent city in 1729. As of 2017, the population of the Baltimore metropolitan area was estimated to be just under 2.802 million, making it the 21st largest metropolitan area in the country. Baltimore is located about 40 miles (64 km) northeast of Washington, D.C., making it a principal city in the Washington-Baltimore combined statistical area (CSA), the fourth-largest CSA in the nation, with a calculated 2018 population of 9,797,063.

Maryland is a state in the Mid-Atlantic region of the United States, bordering Virginia, West Virginia, and the District of Columbia to its south and west; Pennsylvania to its north; and Delaware to its east. The state's largest city is Baltimore, and its capital is Annapolis. Among its occasional nicknames are Old Line State, the Free State, and the Chesapeake Bay State. It is named after the English queen Henrietta Maria, known in England as Queen Mary, who was the wife of King Charles I.

History

As The Convocation Of..., the band was formed by George France, Tonie Joy, and Guy Blakeslee in August 1998.^[1] Joy had previously played in the groups Moss Icon, Universal Order of Armageddon, The Great Unraveling, and Born Against.

Anthony R. "Tonie" Joy is an American musician based in Baltimore, Maryland. Joy is known for his work in several underground rock and post-hardcore bands. He ran the independent record label Vermin Scum from 1989 until 2001.

The Entrance Band is a band started by Guy Blakeslee. Their style of music has been described as psychedelic rock or stoner rock.

Moss Icon is an American post-hardcore band formed in late 1986 in Annapolis, Maryland. Its original members are singer Jonathan Vance, guitarist Tonie Joy, bassist Monica DiGialleonardo, and drummer Mark Laurence. Alex Badertscher joined as second guitarist in 1990. Moss Icon is known as an early influence on the hardcore punk splinter genres known as post-hardcore, as well as for the eventual development of emo, although the band members themselves have denied knowingly contributing to the latter genre in any way.

Following their debut Lab Remix Series Vol. 3 EP, the group's self-titled debut album was released on Gold Standard Laboratories in 2000.^[2] A follow-up, Pyramid Technology, appeared on Tigerstyle Records in 2001.^[3] In early 2002, Blakeslee left the group and founded The Entrance Band. The Convocation Of... went on a hiatus.

Gold Standard Laboratories or GSL was an independent record label which was founded in 1993 in Boulder, Colorado by Sonny Kay. In 2000, it was relocated to San Diego, California, United States, and two years later, to Los Angeles. It was headquartered in L.A. until closing its doors on October 29, 2007.

With Matthew Hall (formerly of The Red Scare) on bass, the band reunited under the name The Convocation in 2005.^[4] Hall was replaced by Jason Stevens in 2008, and the group released a new EP on Gravity Records the next year. Two years later, Stevens was replaced by bassist Chris Camden, who was replaced thereafter by Donny Van Zandt.

Gravity Records is an underground independent record label from San Diego. It was formed in 1991 by Matt Anderson, a member of the influential underground band Heroin. It has been central in developing and promoting the "San Diego sound" – an idiosyncratic form of post-hardcore with loose, chaotic musicianship and vocals, initiated by Heroin, Antioch Arrow, and Clikatat Ikatowi, as well as Mohinder from the Bay Area and Angel Hair from Colorado. The sound is associated with the first wave of screamo, and the label is considered as an important role in the development of post-hardcore in the 1990s. Gravity has also branched out into other forms of experimental or independent music, releasing seminal early works by Unwound, Black Dice, The Rapture, and a full-length from Man Is The Bastard.

My Vitriol are a British alternative rock band, formed in 1999 in London. The band currently comprises singer and guitarist Som Wardner, drummer Ravi Kesavaram, guitarist Seth Taylor and bassist Tatia Starkey. The band had success with their debut album Finelines in 2001 which spawned three Top 40 hit singles in the UK Singles Chart, before announcing a hiatus in 2002. The band were credited as spearheading a new shoegazing movement, dubbed nu gaze. They released new material in 2007, and released limited fanbase album "The Secret Sessions" in October 2016. The band name is taken from the Graham Greene novel Brighton Rock.
