The Cooperation Band (stylised as the cooperation band) is a British brass band based in Glasgow. It has won the Scottish brass band championship a record 36 times, and the National Brass Band Championships of Great Britain twice. [1]
The band was formed in 1918 as the Scottish Co-operative Wholesale Society (SCWS) band, originally drawing its players from the SCWS factories in Glasgow. It continued to receive sponsorship from the Co-operative Group, adopting a number of names relating to the group's business, most recently the Co-operative Funeralcare Band [2] from 2009 until 2019 [1]
As CWS (Glasgow) band, they won the National Brass Band Championships of Great Britain in 1990, and repeated this feat in 1996. [1]
In 2018, it was announced that the Co-operative Group would withdraw its sponsorship, [3] and the band's future seemed in doubt. However, a new sponsorship deal was arranged with Scotmid cooperative society, which brought with it a new name of "the cooperation band". [4]
Black Dyke Band, formerly John Foster & Son Black Dyke Mills Band, is one of the oldest and best-known brass bands in the world. It originated as multiple community bands founded by John Foster at his family's textile mill in Queensbury, West Yorkshire in the mid-19th century. The ensemble has become prominent in competitive band championships and through recordings for film and television.
Partick Thistle Football Club are a professional football club from Glasgow, Scotland. Despite their name, the club are based at Firhill Stadium in the Maryhill area of the city, and have not played in Partick since 1908. The club have been members of the Scottish Professional Football League (SPFL) since its formation in 2013. In the 2020–21 season, Thistle won Scottish League One, the third tier of the SPFL structure, and returned to the Scottish Championship, having been relegated from there in 2019–20.

The Grimethorpe Colliery Band is a brass band, based in Grimethorpe, South Yorkshire, England. It was formed in 1917, as a leisure activity for the workers at the colliery, by members of the disbanded Cudworth Colliery Band. Along with the Black Dyke Mills Band, the band became the first to perform at the Proms. Grimethorpe Band achieved worldwide fame after appearing in the film Brassed Off.
Philip Allen Sparke is an English composer and musician born in London, noted for his concert band and brass band music. His early major works include The Land of the Long White Cloud – "Aotearoa", written for the 1980 Centennial New Zealand Brass Band championship. He subsequently went on to win the EBU New Music for Band Competition three times, including in 1986 with a commission from the BBC called Orient Express.
