The Cork Museum of Palafrugell, Spain, is a museum about the cork industry in Catalonia. Founded in 1972, the Cork Museum is part of the Costa Brava Museum Network [1] and the Network of Local Museums of Catalonia in Girona. [2]
The Cork Museum is located in a modernist factory around a small cork forest. The exhibition consists of an audiovisual space, a journey from the forest to work at the factory to obtain plugs, discs, paper and agglomerate, a space to experiment and a space for participation. [3]
The Cork Museum is divided into three spaces. Two of them are heritage buildings (recognized as Bé Cultural d'Interès Local - BCIL, that means a cultural heritage of local interest): the industrial buildings and Cal Ganxó. The third space, newly constructed, is a reception hall, installation space and warehouse.
In 1972, archaeologist Miquel Oliva and local researchers Joan Badia and Albert Recasens founded the Palafrugell Museum. At the beginning of the 1980s, the museum was divided to create the current Palafrugell archive, including a new monographic specialization on the cork industry.
In 1986, the first conservative square was created. In 1989, the Palafrugell Cork Museum became part of the National Museum of Science and Technology of Catalonia (mNACTEC). In 1991, the first permanent exhibition spaces were opened at the Tarongeta street building.
On June 29, 2012 the Palafrugell Cork Museum opened a new headquarters in the modernist cork factory of Can Mario. It was now the largest cork museum in the world. [4]
The Cork Museum also manages the Centre d'Interpretació del Dipòsit Modernista de Can Mario [5] and the Conjunt Monumental de Sant Sebastià de la Guardia. [6]
The Centre d'Interpretació del Dipòsit Modernista de Can Mario shows how that facility regulated the water supply and water pressure in the Can Mario cork factory. It is a Bé Cultural d'Interès Nacional - BCIN (cultural heritage of national interest) in Spain.
The Conjunt Monumental de Sant Sebastià de la Guarda is an historic site with a watchtower, an 18th-century hermitage and a 19th-century lighthouse.
The Cork Museum offers guided tours, educational activities and visits to both facilities.
The Cork Museum has a collection of 6,200 object. It is also an important cork documentation center, that has received more than 2.000 inquires.

La Bisbal d'Empordà is the county seat of the comarca of Baix Empordà in Catalonia, Spain. The town lies 29 km southeast of Girona, 12 km west of Palafrugell and 19 km northwest of Palamós along road C-66 from Girona to Palafrugell/Palamós, where it becomes C-31. Can Mario Museum is the Fundació Vila Casas Museum of Contemporary Sculpture in Palafrugell. It was opened in 2004. It has around 220 works on show dating from the 1960s to the present day by a wide range of artists born or living in Catalonia. Temporary exhibitions are also held every year.
The Fishing Museum is a museum opened in 2002 and dedicated to the knowledge and dissemination of fishing and the maritime heritage of the Costa Brava. It's located in the area of the fishing port of Palamós, in the old port warehouse called "Tinglado". The permanent exhibition explains the history, the current affairs and the future of Costa Brava fishing in terms of sustainability.
The Museum of the Mediterranean is a museum located in Torroella de Montgrí, founded in 2003, in an attempt to become an area for knowledge, reflection and research for the problems and worries that affect citizens in the 21st century. It is housed in Can Quintana, a 16th-century building. It is dedicated to the knowledge and communication of the Mediterranean Sea and uses the natural sounds, human sounds and music to show the reality of the land, the history and the culture of the village of Torroella, connected with the others Mediterranean cultures and towns. Sa Perola is the net dyeing house of the Fisherman's Guild at Saint Piere. It is located in Carrer de les Voltes de Calella de Palafrugell. Documentation of the dyeing centre was preserved by the same producer until his entrance to the Municipal File of Palafrugell.
The Palau Solterra Museum is one of the cultural centers of the Vila Casas Foundation located, located in the palace of the same name in Torroella de Montgrí (Girona), a town of the Baix Empordà region. It opened in 2000, and nowadays it houses about three hundred contemporary photographs of the city, artists from various parts of the world, including Chema Madoz, Alberto García Álix, Toni Catany, Otto Lloyd, Xavier Miserachs, Ouka Lele and Frank Horvat, among many others.
Irene Rocas i Romaguera (1861-1947) was a Catalan folklorist and lexicographer. Her works contributed to the research on Empordà language and literature. One of the most notable of these was the Diccionari català-valencià-balear, a collaboration with the Majorcan author Mossèn Alcover. She was the mother of the Spanish writer, folklorist, and academic, Maria Gracia Bassa i Rocas.
