The Fretless are a Canadian folk music group based in Toronto, Ontario. [1] The group, consisting of violinists Trent Freeman, Karrnnel Sawitsky and Ben Plotnick, and cellist Eric Wright, [1] [2] won the Juno Award for Instrumental Album of the Year at the Juno Awards of 2017. [3]

History

The group released its debut album Waterbound in 2012, and received Canadian Folk Music Awards for Instrumental Group of the Year and Ensemble of the Year at the 8th Canadian Folk Music Awards. [4] Their self-titled second album, released in 2014, again won the CFMA for Ensemble of the Year. [5]

Their third album, Bird's Nest, was released in 2016. The nine tracks are a mixture of original compositions and traditional tunes. Bird's Nest won a 2017 Juno Award for Instrumental Album of the Year. [3]

The band's fourth album, Live from the Art Farm, came out in 2018. In 2019, The Fretless were once again nominated for Instrumental Album of the Year at the Juno Awards for Live from the Art Farm. [6]

In 2021, the band began releasing singles from their album Open House, featuring guest vocalists including Taylor Ashton, Dan Mangan, Celeigh Cardinal, Ruth Moody, Rachel Sermanni, Nuela Charles and The Bros. Landreth. [7] Open House was a Juno nominee for Contemporary Roots Album of the Year at the Juno Awards of 2022. [8]

At the core of Sultans of String's musical vision is the belief that societies derive strength from diversity, and that common ground can be found amidst one's differences.

Chris McKhool is a Canadian violinist, producer, guitarist, composer, and singer-songwriter. He has received numerous awards for his work, including four JUNO Award nominations and four Canadian Folk Music Awards for his various recordings.

The Jerry Cans are a band from Iqaluit, Nunavut who combine traditional Inuit throat singing with folk music and country rock. Their music is largely written in Inuktitut, the indigenous language of the Inuit people, with lyrics which "reflect the challenges and beauty of life in the Far North". Their 2016 album, Inuusiq/Life, was released on Aakuluk Music, Nunavut's first record label, which the band's members established in 2016 "to support Inuit and Indigenous musicians".

The East Pointers Canadian contemporary folk music group

The East Pointers are a Canadian contemporary folk music group from Prince Edward Island, who won the Juno Award for Traditional Roots Album of the Year for their album Secret Victory at the Juno Awards of 2017. The group originally consisted of guitarist Jake Charron, banjoist Koady Chaisson, and fiddler Tim Chaisson. They perform Celtic-influenced original songs and instrumentals with contemporary influences.

Shane Cook is a Canadian violinist. He is a long-time member of the celtic fusion ensemble Bowfire, and is a past Canadian Grand Master fiddler and U.S. National Fiddle Champion. His musical career has taken him to tour across Canada, the United States, Mexico, Germany, England, China and Taiwan.

Roberto C. López is a Colombian-Canadian composer, musician and producer from Montreal, Quebec, whose style blends Afro-Colombian rhythms such as cumbia, porró, mapalé, chandé, champeta and currulao with urban styles such as funk, jazz, rock and afrobeat. He has released albums both under his own name and with the bands Roberto López Project and Roberto López Afro-Colombian Jazz Orchestra.

Còig is a Canadian folk music group from Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia. The group consists of Darren McMullen on guitar, mandolin, mandola, banjo, bouzouki, whistles, flute and vocals; Rachel Davis on fiddle, viola and vocals; Jason Roach on piano and Chrissy Crowley on fiddle and viola.

Le Diable à Cinq Canadian folk music band

Le Diable à Cinq is a Canadian folk music group from the Outaouais region of Quebec, who play traditional Québécois folk music. Based in the town of Ripon, the group consists of brothers Éloi, Samuel and Félix Sabourin, their cousin André-Michel Dambremont, and their childhood friend Rémi Pagé.
