The Historical Museum of Northern Jutland (HMNJ) ( Danish: Nordjyllands Historiske Museum) is the product of the fusion of Aalborg Historical Museum, The Museum Society for Hals, The Museum Society of Hadsund, The South Himmerland Museum, and others, in 2004. The museum system in this umbrella organization is administered by a 12-member committee, with members from the participating organizations. The administrative headquarters is in Algade 48, Aalborg.
The Historical Museum of Northern Jutland works with research, collection, documentation, conservation, and promotion of local and cultural history in Aalborg, Mariagerfjord, Rebild, and Jammerbugt Municipality. [1]
The museum's mission is: "Attentive history". According to their website, a more elaborate description reads: [2]
"With a firm professional anchor and an unassuming appeal, The Historical Museum of Northern Jutland should in its approach create and maintain the foundation for the understanding of history. Within a horizon of 5 to 10 years, the museum should be among the 5 best museums in Denmark, gauged by the five pillars of all museums: collecting, conservation, registering, research and educational outreach."
HMNJ is also responsible for care of many of the pre-historic sites like barrows and dolmens, within the associated municipalities.

Hadsund is a town in the eastern part of Jutland with a population of 4,965. The town is located by the narrow strait of Hadsund, along an inlet of the Mariager Fjord. It is situated south of the city of Aalborg and north of the city of Randers. The town is a part of Mariagerfjord Municipality in the North Denmark Region. Until 2007, Hadsund was the administrative seat of Hadsund Municipality.
Hobro is an old market and railway town in Region Nordjylland on the Jutland peninsula in northern Denmark. It has a population of 12,217. The town is situated in a hilly terrain at the head of Mariager Fjord, close to the former Viking fortress of Fyrkat. It is the seat of Mariagerfjord municipality.
Sejlflod Municipality was a municipality in the former North Jutland County on the east coast of the Jutland peninsula in northern Denmark. The municipality covered an area of 208 km2, and had a total population of 9,394 (2005). Its last mayor was Kristian Schnoor, a member of the Social Democrats (Socialdemokraterne) political party. The main town and site of its municipal council was the town of Storvorde, ca. 12 kilometers east of Aalborg city center. Just south of Storvorde is the small town named Sejlflod which named the municipality. To the east is Ålborg Bay.
Skørping is a railway town in Rebild Municipality in Region Nordjylland in the geographic region of the Jutland peninsula known as Himmerland in northern Denmark. The modern town has a population of 3,076 as of 1 January 2024.
Lindholm Høje is a major Viking burial site and former settlement situated to the north of and overlooking the city of Aalborg in Denmark.
Vendsyssel is the northernmost traditional district of Denmark and of Jutland. Being divided from mainland Jutland by the Limfjord, it is technically a part of the North Jutlandic Island which also comprises the areas Hanherred and Thy. Vendsyssel is part of the North Denmark Region.
Nørresundby is a city in Aalborg Municipality, north of Limfjorden, in Vendsyssel, in Denmark. The urban area has a population of 24,281. It is located just north of Aalborg, which lies south of Limfjorden. Statistically its own urban area since 2006, it is often still considered part of Aalborg; sometimes the name Greater Aalborg (Stor-Aalborg) is used to describe the concept.
The North Jutland Region, or in some official sources, the North Denmark Region, is an administrative region of Denmark established on 1 January 2007 as part of the 2007 Danish municipal reform, which abolished the traditional counties and set up five larger regions. At the same time, smaller municipalities were merged into larger units, cutting the number of municipalities from 271 before 1 January 2006, when Ærø Municipality was created, to 98. North Jutland Region has 11 municipalities. The reform diminished the power of the regional level dramatically in favor of the local level and the central government in Copenhagen.
Fyrkat is a former Viking ring castle in Denmark, dating from c. 980 AD. It is located near the town of Hobro, some distance from the present end of the Mariager Fjord in Northern Jutland. The fortress is built on a narrow piece of land, with a stream on one side and swampy area on the other sides. Likely built during the reign of Harald Gormsson or his son Sweyn Forkbeard, the fortress may have served as barracks or as a defensive stronghold. It would have help to enable control of the traffic on the main land-based trading route between Aalborg and Aarhus. Because of its unique architecture and testimony to the strategic power of the House of Knýtlinga, Fyrkat was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List along with four other Viking ring castles in 2023.
Hals is a harbour and tourist town with a population of 2,470 in Region Nordjylland's Aalborg Municipality on the east coast of the Jutland peninsula in northern Denmark.
Aalborg or Ålborg is Denmark's fourth largest urban settlement with a population of 119,862 in the town proper and an urban population of 143,598. As of 1 July 2022, the Municipality of Aalborg had a population of 221,082, making it the third most populous in the country after the municipalities of Copenhagen (capital) and Aarhus. Eurostat and OECD have used a definition for the metropolitan area of Aalborg, which includes all municipalities in the province of North Jutland, with a total population of 594,323 as of 1 July 2022.
Aalborg Historical Museum is a historical and cultural museum in the city of Aalborg in Denmark. The museum was established in 1863 and is now part of The Historical Museum of Northern Jutland.
A number of military museums are operational in Denmark, showing exhibitions on military subjects and providing information on Danish or international military history. These museums may be state funded or private foundations.
The Vendsyssel railway line is a 80.7 km (50.1 mi) long standard gauge single track railway line in Denmark which runs through the historical region of Vendsyssel between Aalborg and Frederikshavn in North Jutland. It constitutes the northernmost part of the East Jutland longitudinal railway line, the through route along the east coast of the Jutland Peninsula from the German border at Padborg to Frederikshavn.
Hadsund Municipality was a municipality in North Jutland County on the Jutland peninsula in northern Denmark until 1 January 2007 the municipality covered an area of 170.28 km², and had a total population of 10,914 (2004). Its last mayor was Karl Christensen, a member of the Social Democrats (Socialdemokraterne) political party.
There are several museums in Aalborg, Denmark. These include a museum of modern art, a historical museum and a maritime museum. Together with the city's theatre, cultural centre and music interests, they constitute an important aspect of the municipality's recent focus on knowledge and culture.
