The Human Zoo, was a radio program that was presented by Tommy Boyd, with his engineer Asher Gould acting as co-presenter. It was broadcast from May 2000 until Boyd's dismissal in March 2002. The program was named after the 1969 book by Desmond Morris.
The program adopted a 'phone-in' format where callers were not pre-screened and could freely discuss topics within broadcasting regulations.
To ensure compliance, a dump button was utilized, a common method in radio to prevent the broadcast of offensive or illegal content. The station's output was delayed slightly, enabling the station to silence any unwanted remarks from callers before they aired. The Human Zoo welcomed a diverse range of callers, some of whom contributed short performances, played prepared audio pieces, or simply shared catchphrases.
Boyd was dismissed from Talksport, the radio station the program was hosted on, in March 2002 after failing to use the profanity delay to "dump" a caller's remarks that the British Royal Family should be shot. [1] [2]

On television, phone-in's are often part of a wider discussion programme: a current example in the UK is the "Jeremy Vine" TV show.

He presented Steve Wright in the Afternoon for 12 years on BBC Radio 1 and 23 years on BBC Radio 2, two of the BBC's national radio stations. He continued to present his Sunday Love Songs on Radio 2 until his death and, in October 2023, he took over as the host of the long-running Pick of the Pops chart show. On BBC Television, Wright hosted Home Truths, The Steve Wright People Show, Auntie's TV Favourites, Top of the Pops and TOTP2.

Such a delay may be to prevent mistakes or unacceptable content from being broadcast. Longer delays lasting several hours can also be introduced so that the material is aired at a later scheduled time to maximize viewership. Tape delays lasting several hours can also be edited down to remove filler material or to trim a broadcast to the network's desired run time for a broadcast slot, but this is not always the case.

A typical program consisted of King interviewing a guest, then taking phone calls from listeners for the guest, and then taking phone calls on any topic. In 1982, the show won a Peabody Award.

The Sunday Night Show with Iain Lee was a Sony Award Silver-winning weekly radio show broadcast on Absolute Radio, between 10 pm on Sunday and 1 am on Monday, hosted by Iain Lee and produced by Eloise Carr, formerly by Dave "Davis" Lambert. The format of the show was primarily phone-in based, with callers discussing the pre-set topics of the evening, or to discuss topics that they themselves introduce. The show is notable for allowing calls to be aired unscreened for the last half-hour of the show, in a segment called "MMM", which is similar in format to The Human Zoo. As well as talk, records are sparsely played throughout the show due to Absolute Radio's license as a music station. The show ended in September 2009, and was replaced a month later by Iain Lee's 2 Hour Long Late Night Radio Show on the same station.
