The Lebanese Rocket Society is a 2012 Franco - Lebanese documentary film directed by Joana Hadjithomas and Khalil Joreige and released theatrically on 1 May 2013. [1]

Synopsis

In the 1960s, Lebanon was the first Arab country to start sending rockets into the sky. [2] Led by Manoug Manougian, their physics teacher, a small group of students from the Haigazian University (called Haigazian College at the time) began tests and launched their first rockets to conquer space under the name ″Lebanese Rocket Society″. Their work was briefly a source of national pride.

Although a French reference gives its running time as 84 minutes, other resources indicate 80 minutes, with the work, in its entirety, composed of six vignettes, between 10 and 15 minutes in length, each by a different director, depicting formative incidents in the pre-adolescent lives of iconic filmmakers Fritz Lang, Orson Welles, Jacques Tati, Jean Renoir, Alfred Hitchcock and Ingmar Bergman, with each segment structured to resemble its subject's familiar signature style.

The Lebanese space program was not initially an official government-sponsored effort. Rather, it revolved around the Lebanese Rocket Society which emerged from the Haigazian College Rocket Society, and was founded by Manoug Manougian in 1960. The original society gained fame in Lebanon after a series of successful launches of Cedar rockets and in 1962 President Fouad Chehab announced limited governmental funding for the renamed Lebanese Rocket Society which was also contacted by the Lebanese military to develop weapons.

Considered as one of the most promising film producers in the Middle-East cinema, Schoucair has produced several critically acclaimed and award-winning independent movies. He has actively contributed to the development of cinema in Lebanon as well as African cinema.
