The Mother Company is an American media company that produces television, web, and literary content for family audiences. the company is based in Los Angeles, California.

History

Founder and CEO Abbie Schiller, a public relations executive and former VP with ABC and Kiehl's partnered with Samantha Kurtzman-Counter (President), a director and producer, who has worked on programs for ABC, CBS, NBC, Vh1, MTV and the Disney Channel. The Mother Company launched on Mother's Day, 2010. Together, Schiller and Kurtzman-Counter are known as “mothers on a mission to redefine children’s entertainment." [1]

Company Funding

Seeking business funding, Schiller initially approached angel investors. Because they wanted to give her more than twice the amount she needed, she turned down offers from three different traditional investment companies. [2] Instead, Schiller and Kurtzman-Counter presented the company to mothers on the playground, at school events and birthday parties before establishing a niche group of individual investors in and around Los Angeles. [3] All but one of the company's more than 20 investors is a mother and the founders have kept majority control. [4]

The Mother Company's core product, the Emmy®-winning educational TV series Ruby's Studio, is designed to entertain young children while helping them to develop essential pro-social skills and emotional intelligence. Live-action show host, Ruby (Played by Kelsey Collins), guides children as they explore everyday social-emotional challenges through animation, DIY craft projects, and original music. The children are also introduced to feelings through animated, art and musical segment inserts. [5] Children's artists Elizabeth Mitchell and Lucky Diaz and the Family Jam Band are featured as musical guests. [6]

Development & Production

The Mother Company has a development deal with eOne to develop live action content for teens and tweens. [7] The companies have set their first two projects under the pact, one based on Howard Wallace, PI, the first book in a three-book series by Casey Lyall, and the other based on Anne Ursu's The Lost Girl, both executive produced by Drew Barrymore's Flower Films. Amanda Bowman Gerisch, VP, Scripted Development, Television at eOne is set to run point for the partnership.

Awards & Appearances

The Mother Company's products, Ruby's Studio and the companion book series, have won a wide range of awards. Ruby's Studio: The Siblings Show won the NATAS Mid-Atlantic Emmy in 2016 for Outstanding Children's Show. [8] Other Awards include both Academic's Choice Smart Book and Smart Media Awards, [9] [10] multiple Creative Child Awards including DVD of the Year in 2012 and 2013, [11] [12] Red Tricycle's Coolest Kids Flick Award, [13] a Parent's Choice Foundation Gold Award, [14] National Parenting Publication Awards [15] and the prestigious Cynopsis Kid's Imagination Award in 2014. Dragon Tales is an animated educational fantasy children's television series created by Jim Coane and Ron Rodecker, developed by Coane, Wesley Eure, Jeffrey Scott, Cliff Ruby and Elana Lesser, and produced by the Children's Television Workshop, Columbia TriStar Television, Sony Pictures Television and Adelaide Productions. The series focuses on the adventures of two siblings, Emmy and Max, and their dragon friends Ord, Cassie, Zak, Wheezie, and Quetzal.

Jakers! The Adventures of Piggley Winks, Jakers in Europe, is a computer-animated children's television series. The series was broadcast on PBS Kids in the United States, and on CBBC and CBeebies in the United Kingdom. It was also broadcast in Australia on ABC Kids. The series ran for three seasons and 52 episodes total from September 7, 2003, to January 23, 2007, with reruns airing through August 31, 2008. Reruns aired on the Qubo television network from June 30, 2012 to March 26, 2017.

Rich Koz is an American actor and broadcaster best known for his portrayal of horror-movie host Svengoolie, as well as his early '90s children's cartoon showcase The Koz Zone. Koz is also the host of the syndicated Stooge-a-Palooza program. In 2021, he was inducted into the Rondo Hatton Classic Horror Awards' Monster Kid Hall of Fame.

<i>Zoboomafoo</i> 1999 television series

Zoboomafoo is a live-action/animated children's television series that originally aired on PBS from January 25, 1999, to November 21, 2001. It was formerly shown in public television and was regularly shown on Sprout until 2012. A total of 65 episodes were aired. A creation of the Kratt Brothers, it features a talking lemur named Zoboomafoo, performed by Canadian puppeteer Gord Robertson, and mainly portrayed by a lemur named Jovian, along with a collection of returned animal guests.

<i>Fetch! with Ruff Ruffman</i> American animated television series

Fetch! with Ruff Ruffman is an American live-action/animated television series that aired on PBS Kids Go! and is largely targeted toward children ages 6–10. It is a reality-game show that is hosted by an animated anthropomorphic dog named Ruff Ruffman who dispenses challenges to the show's real-life contestants. The series ran for five seasons and 100 episodes from May 29, 2006, to November 4, 2010, on PBS, with 30 contestants in that time. Although a sixth season was planned, with auditions taking place in January 2010, WGBH announced on June 14, 2010, that due to lack of funding, the series would end. In June 2008, the series received its first Emmy for Best Original Song for its theme.

She won the 2002 Emmy for Best Animated Program for The New Adventures of Madeline, for which she was writer, lyricist, story editor and supervising producer on over 70 episodes. She was nominated for seven additional Emmys, and also won an Ace award and the Humanitas Prize. In 2016 Rothman created the preschool television series Julie's Greenroom with Julie Andrews and Emma Walton Hamilton. The show stars Julie Andrews, who is joined by her assistant Gus and the “Greenies,” a cast of original puppets built by The Jim Henson Company and premiered on Netflix on March 17, 2017.

Joshua Selig is an American television producer and director. He won ten Daytime Emmy Awards for his work as a writer on Sesame Street. After leaving Sesame Street, Selig partnered with Lori Shaer to create a studio called Little Airplane Productions. Through Little Airplane, Selig produced Oobi for Noggin, Wonder Pets! for Nickelodeon, and 3rd & Bird for the BBC.

<i>Good Luck Charlie</i> American sitcom

Good Luck Charlie is an American sitcom that aired on Disney Channel from April 4, 2010, to February 16, 2014. The series' creators, Phil Baker and Drew Vaupen, wanted to create a program that would appeal to entire families, not just children. It focuses on the Duncan family of Denver as they adjust to the births of their fourth and fifth children, Charlotte "Charlie" and Toby. In each episode, Teddy Duncan adds to a video diary that contains advice for Charlie about their family and life as a teenager. Teddy tries to show Charlie what she might go through when she is older for future reference. Each video diary ends with Teddy saying the eponymous phrase, "Good luck, Charlie".

The Cat in the Hat Knows a Lot About That! is a Flash-animated musical preschool television series featuring Martin Short as the voice of The Cat in the Hat, that premiered on Treehouse TV in Canada on August 7, 2010, also airing on YTV in Canada on weekday mornings from 2012 to 2013, and on PBS Kids and PBS Kids Preschool in the US on September 6, 2010. It also aired on CITV and Tiny Pop in the UK. The show is based on Random House's Beginner Books franchise and The Cat in the Hat's Learning Library, itself based on the 1957 children's book The Cat in the Hat.

Deborah Forte is an American producer of family television series and movies, websites and digital media including Clifford the Big Red Dog, Clifford's Puppy Days, Maya & Miguel, WordGirl, The Magic School Bus, the series Goosebumps, Sony's films Goosebumps and Goosebumps 2: Haunted Halloween, Horrible Histories, Dragon, I Spy, The Baby-Sitters Club, The Golden Compass, and Astroblast. She created Scholastic Media, a division of Scholastic Inc. She is the founder of Silvertongue Films and under that banner is currently producing a television adaptation of His Dark Materials. Sixteen South is an Irish company that creates, produces, and distributes television for children. Founded in Belfast in 2007 by Colin Williams, Sixteen South has partnered with major names in children's entertainment, co-producing shows with Sesame Workshop, The Jim Henson Company and the BBC.

The series first premiered on the Noggin app and on the Nick Jr. Youtube channel. Music from the series was released as an album across music streaming platforms.
