The Musician (French: La Musicienne) also known as Blue Woman with a Guitar (French: Femme bleu a la guitare) is a 1929 oil-on-canvas painting by the Polish Art Deco painter Tamara de Lempicka.
The painting depicts a young, elegant, dark-haired woman wearing a blue dress. The woman is absorbed in music making holding a guitar in her hands. The figure of the woman is set against a city landscape.[ citation needed ]
The painting was created by Lempicka in 1929 in Paris. In 2009, it was stolen from the Scheringa Museum of Realist Art in Spanbroek and went missing for seven years. In 2017, the artwork was recovered by Dutch art crime investigator Artur Brand alongside a stolen piece by Salvador Dalí. [2] The painting is also notable in that it was featured in Madonna's music video to her 1990 song Vogue . [3]
The female figure in the painting draws comparisons to classical muses or Renaissance sibyls and can be interpreted as an allegrical representation of the art of music, which is a traditional theme in art. However, the artist decided to portray the woman in a very modern manner: she has a chic flapper hairstyle and her figure is presented against an urban landscape. This juxtaposition of old and new is a characteristic feature of many of her works. The skyscrapers visible in the background demonstrate "a maturation in Lempicka’s style, as they represent her exposure to the new technological marvels of America". [4] [5]
In November 2018, the painting was purchased by an anonymous buyer for over US$ 9 million at a Christie's auction in New York. Lempicka's The Musician set a new record for the most expensive painting by a Polish artist at the time. [6]
Georges Braque was a major 20th-century French painter, collagist, draughtsman, printmaker and sculptor. His most notable contributions were in his alliance with Fauvism from 1905, and the role he played in the development of Cubism. Braque's work between 1908 and 1912 is closely associated with that of his colleague Pablo Picasso. Their respective Cubist works were indistinguishable for many years, yet the quiet nature of Braque was partially eclipsed by the fame and notoriety of Picasso.
Tamara Łempicka, better known as Tamara de Lempicka, was a Polish painter who spent her working life in France and the United States. She is best known for her polished Art Deco portraits of aristocrats and the wealthy, and for her highly stylized paintings of nudes.

Tamara is a 1981 play by John Krizanc about the painter Tamara de Lempicka. The play is based on the historical meeting of Gabriele d'Annunzio and Lempicka, who was hoping to be commissioned by d'Annunzio to paint his portrait. He had invited her to his villa at Gardone Riviera, on the southwest shore of Lake Garda, a villa now known as Il Vittoriale degli Italiani.
The Weeping Woman is a series of oil on canvas paintings by Pablo Picasso, the last of which was created in late 1937. The paintings depict Dora Maar, Picasso's mistress and muse. The Weeping Woman paintings were produced by Picasso in response to the bombing of Guernica in the Spanish Civil War and are closely associated with the iconography in his painting Guernica. Picasso was intrigued with the subject of the weeping woman, and revisited the theme numerous times that year. The last version, created on 26 October 1937, was the most elaborate of the series, and has been housed in the collection of the Tate Modern in London since 1987. Another Weeping Woman painting created on 18 October 1937 is housed at the National Gallery of Victoria and was involved in a high-profile political art theft.

Galerie Ror Volmar or Ror Volmar Gallery was an influential art gallery located at 58 Rue de Bourgogne in the 7th arrondissement of Paris. The gallery specialized in contemporary figurative painters. In 1970, Art International reported that the gallery had been "holding an exhibition of paintings unusual both in content and treatment." Ukrainian painter Liuboslav Hutsaliuk held his first exhibition at the gallery in 1956. Tamara de Lempicka showcased at the gallery from 30 May to 17 June, 1961. Durnad Rosé showcased at the gallery from 10 to 23 November, 1967. In 1977, the gallery honored Marcel Anselme. In the early 70s, the French impressionist painter Jean Fernand showcased some works at the gallery.
