The Planterra Conservatory is a complex of greenhouses in West Bloomfield, Michigan.

History

The Planterra Corporation was established as an interior landscape firm founded in 1973 by Larry M. Pliska. [1] It is also a distributor of live and replica plants in the United States. It is co-owned by the founder, his wife CEO Carol Pliska, and their son Shane Pliska. [2] The company opened the Planterra Conservatory as an extension of their original business in 2010. [2] Construction began in October 2008. [3]

The Conservatory was established in West Bloomfield, intended to combine plant shopping with the experience of simply visiting an indoor garden. The conservatory complex consists of 23,000-square-feet. [4] The space is enclosed in three adjoining glass greenhouses with European hipped rooflines. [5] Its roof controls heating vents and cooling curtains to provide energy efficiency to the complex. [6] In September 2011 the Conservatory and design firm was awarded three National Awards of Excellence by the Plantscape Industry Alliance for the renovation of Palmhouse at Rideau Hall in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, the Meditation Garden at St. Joseph’s Mercy Hospital in Ypsilanti, Michigan, and the Living Wall and Bar at Planterra Conservatory. [1] [7] Planterra has also been awarded the prestigious Diamond Award at the International Plantscape Awards twice, [8] most recently in July 2019 for their work on the Parkview Cancer Institute in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Installations and events

The structure was not built in order to host events, [10] however it has become a very popular wedding venue for couples across the country even hosting the wedding of Olympians Tanith Belbin and Charlie White. [11] In March 2011 the Conservatory hosted the inaugural Botanical Glass Salon and Exhibition. [4] The Detroit Symphony Orchestra also hosts concerts in the building each year. [12]

Carl Milles was a Swedish sculptor. He was married to artist Olga Milles and brother to Ruth Milles and half-brother to the architect Evert Milles. Carl Milles sculpted the Gustaf Vasa statue at the Stockholm Nordic Museum, the Poseidon statue in Gothenburg, the Orpheus group outside the Stockholm Concert Hall, and the Fountain of Faith in Falls Church, Virginia. The conservatory is popular year round. The public entrance is at 1800 North Dixboro Road in Ann Arbor, Michigan. The grounds are open every day, but trails are not maintained in the winter. The conservatory, garden store, and lobby are open 7 days a week: Mon., Tues., and Thurs. - Sun., 10:00 am–4:30 pm; Wednesdays 10 am-8 pm. The building complex is only closed on three holidays a year. The institution's main web site with updated information is Matthaei Botanical Gardens and Nichols Arboretum.

The Anna Scripps Whitcomb Conservatory is a greenhouse and a botanical garden located on Belle Isle, a 982-acre (397-hectare) island park located on the Detroit River within Detroit, Michigan. While located near the Canada–United States border, the island is entirely within the U.S. The park itself consists of 13 acres of preserved land for the conservatory and its botanical garden.

As of 2012, the Indian populations of Farmington Hills and Troy are among the twenty largest Indian communities in the United States. As of the 2000 U.S. Census there were 39,527 people with origins from post-partition India in Metro Detroit, making them the largest Asian ethnic group in the Wayne County-Macomb County-Oakland County tri-county area. People of those origins are found throughout Metro Detroit, with the majority being in Oakland County.

Little Caesars Arena is a multi-purpose arena in Midtown Detroit. Opened on September 5, 2017, the arena, which cost $862.9 million to construct, replaced Joe Louis Arena and The Palace of Auburn Hills as the home of the Detroit Red Wings of the National Hockey League (NHL) and the Detroit Pistons of the National Basketball Association (NBA), respectively.
