The Rise of the Green Left: Inside the Worldwide Ecosocialist Movement is a 2010 book by British political activist Derek Wall.
The book documents the rise of ecosocialism, from the UK to Latin America. The book is described as documenting "indigenous protest in the Peruvian Amazon to the green transition in Cuba to the creation of red-green parties in Europe" and noting that "ecosocialism is defining the future of left and green politics globally" and the support given to ecosocialism by Evo Morales and Hugo Chavez. The author also writes that Karl Marx was an early pioneer of ecosocialism. The book is recommend as "a great handbook for activists and engaged students of politics".
The Member of the House of Commons of the United Kingdom for Brighton Pavilion, and then leader of the Green Party of England and Wales Caroline Lucas wrote of the book "with our planet in the grip of a severe environmental crisis we should never tire of seeking fresh alternatives. And, with so many our environmental problems being caused and sustained by an unrelenting demand for economic growth, Derek Wall's The Rise of the Green Left sets out a new political agenda of huge significance. Highly recommended" while Salma Yaqoob, then leader of the Respect Party in the UK praised the book, saying it was "easily the most important book on this subject – The Rise of the Green Left provides an essential guide for anyone interested in how politics and ecology can come together to solve the most pressing issues of our times". In Socialist Review the book was commended, with the reviewer writing Wall's "polemic against the use of market-based instruments to tackle the climate crisis is poignant", whilst criticising some elements. As of 2021, she is an associate professor, and professor of climate justice at the University of British Columbia, co-directing a Centre for Climate Justice.
Petra Karin Kelly was a German Green politician and ecofeminist activist. She was a founding member of the German Green Party, the first Green party to rise to prominence both nationally in Germany and worldwide. Derek Norman Wall is a British politician. The Green Left is an anti-capitalist and eco-socialist grouping within the Green Party of England and Wales. It seeks to constitute a network for "socialists and other radicals" in the Green Party, as well as "act[ing] as an outreach body that will communicate the party's radical policies to other socialists and anti-capitalists outside the party." The People's Climate March (PCM) was a large-scale activist event orchestrated by the People's Climate Movement to advocate global action against climate change, which took place on Sunday, September 21, 2014, in New York City, along with a series of companion actions worldwide, many of which also took the name People's Climate March. With an estimated 311,000 participants, the New York event was the largest climate change march in history. Described as "an invitation to change everything," the march was called in May 2014 by the global advocacy human rights group Avaaz and 350.org, the environmental organization founded by writer/activist Bill McKibben, and it was endorsed by "over 1,500 organizations, including many international and national unions, churches, schools and community and environmental justice organizations." It was conceived as a response to the scheduled U.N. Climate Summit of world leaders to take place in New York City two days later, on September 23.
