The Scene was a short-lived Canadian psychedelic rock band who had a Top 20 hit in their country in 1967 with "Scenes (From Another World)". Some members of the group would later end up in another Canadian rock band, Life.

Background

The Scene were a popular Montreal group. [1] [2] The line-up consisted of Michael Ship on keyboards, Truly Noland on guitar, Danny Zimmerman on bass and Marty Simon on drums. They released a single "Scenes (from Another World)" bw "You're In A Bad Way". The song got to #14 on the RPM Chart on December 2nd, 1967. [3] [4]

Career

Neil Sheppard aka Neil Ship was in New York, where he met Hank Medress and The Tokens, who owned the B.T. Puppy label. He did some studio work for them. In late 1967, he helped his brother Michael Ship to get a one-off single deal for The Scene, which led to the group recording the psychedelic rock flavored "Scenes (from Another World)" bw "You're in a Bad Way". Their single was released on B.T. Puppy 533 in 1967. [6] The October 28th issue of RPM Music Weekly confirmed its release. [7] Referring to The Scene as "a top Montreal group", it was reported by Billboard in the October 21, 1967 issue that "Scenes From Another World" had made its international debut on the B.T. Puppy label. [8] By November 25, the single had entered the RPM Canadian Hits chart at #15. [9] By December 2nd. their single had moved up from #15 to #14. [10] The following week it was at #13. [11] The week after, it was still holding the #13 position. [12]

Break up

After the group broke up, producer, songwriter Neil Sheppard was looking for a group to record his songs. The group Life included three Scene members and was chosen to record for him. They would go on to have a hit with "Hands of the Clock". [13] [14]

Douglas Brian Riley, CM was a Canadian musician, also known as Dr. Music. He spent two decades with the Famous People Players as its musical director, besides his participation on over 300 album projects in various genres. Riley died of a heart attack on August 27, 2007.

Gwendolyn Dianne Brooks, was a soul, r&b and jazz singer from New Jersey. With the Three Playmates, Brooks recorded several songs in 1957. She moved to Toronto shortly thereafter. The group scored some success in the US with their single, "When I Die", which hit #1 in Canada and #18 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1969. The group didn't have a bass guitarist. William Smith would play the bass notes on his keyboard. They did however use bass players on their studio recordings.

Footloose was a Canadian band that had a hit in 1979 with "Leaving For Maui". The membership included Tim Feehan and later, Doug Riley.

B.T. Puppy Records was an American record label formed in New York City in 1963 by Bright Tunes Productions, a music publishing and production company established by vocal group The Tokens.

The Soul Searchers were an important part of Canadian soul music history. The group contained notable artists such as Diane Brooks, Eric Mercury, William "Smitty" Smith, Steve Kennedy and Eric "Mouse" Johnson. At times they are also referred to Diane Brooks, Eric Mercury and The Soul Searchers or Eric Mercury and the Soul Searchers.

Truck was a 1970s Canadian rock group with a musical style similar to Natural Gas and Lighthouse. Signed to the Capitol label, they released two singles and an album. The outfit started out as Sound Spectrum in 1966 and by the early 1970s they had absorbed experienced musicians from groups Natural Gas and Motherlode. Their name had also been changed to Truck! The 1970s lineup was completely different to what it was when the group began. A busy live attraction, they did reasonably well with their album Truck which had an unbroken run for about a month-and-a-half in the charts.
