The Severin Sisters are an American roots band consisting of Amy Severin and Heidi Severin (born September 25, 1983), twin sisters from Salem, Oregon. Younger sister, Haley Severin, officially joined the band in 2017, after years of making special appearances. They have participated in musical festivals and competitions on the state and national levels, ranking highly in several.[ citation needed ] They have toured the Pacific Northwest since 2001, [1] including opening gigs for the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. Many traditional songs have been sung within the same family or folk group for generations, and sometimes trace back to such origins as Great Britain, Europe, or Africa. Salem is the capital of the U.S. state of Oregon, and the county seat of Marion County. At the age of 14, Amy placed second in the Oregon State Banjo Championship.[ citation needed ] In 2002, she placed 10th in the National Banjo Competition held in Winfield, Kansas.[ citation needed ]
Winfield is a city and county seat of Cowley County, Kansas, United States. It is situated along the Walnut River in South Central Kansas. As of the 2010 census, the city population was 12,301 and second most populous city of Cowley County.
Heidi won second place at the National Mandolin Championship in 2002. [3]
In 2000, the duo recorded their first album, Too Many Miles. The following year they recorded Let's Talk. Their most recent album, released in 2003, is Carefree Times. Carefree Times was re-released with new graphics June 2007. They have collaborated with such musicians as John Carter Cash and John Cowan of New Grass Revival, and Nashville songwriters Dean Miller and Sarah Majors. [2]
John Carter Cash is an American country singer-songwriter, author and producer. He is the only child of Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash. He has six half-sisters: Rosanne Cash, Kathy Cash, Cindy Cash, Tara Cash, Carlene Carter, and Rosie Nix Adams.
John Cowan is an American soul music and progressive bluegrass vocalist and bass guitar player. He was the lead vocalist and bass player for the New Grass Revival. Cowan became the band's bassist in 1972 after the departure of original bassist Ebo Walker and was noted as being the only member of New Grass Revival not to come from a bluegrass background.
New Grass Revival was an American progressive bluegrass band founded in 1971, and composed of Sam Bush, Courtney Johnson, Ebo Walker, Curtis Burch, Butch Robins, John Cowan, Béla Fleck and Pat Flynn. They were active between 1971 and 1989, releasing more than twenty albums as well as six singles. Their highest-charting single is "Callin' Baton Rouge", which peaked at No. 37 on the U.S. country charts in 1989 and was a Top 5 country hit for Garth Brooks five years later.
Each sister graduated from Oregon State University with a bachelor's degree in music. They both now teach music in the Salem-Keizer School District. [3]
