The Tutor of History is a novel by Nepalese-Canadian writer Manjushree Thapa. [1] [2] It was published in 2001 by Penguin Books. [3] The book is considered one of the first books written by a Nepalese writer in English. [4]

It is the first novel of the writer who had previously written a non-fiction book called Mustang Bhot in Fragments published in 1992.

Synopsis

The book is set in 1990s Nepal. The main plot of the book is centered around the campaign for parliamentary elections in the roadside town of Khaireni Tar, situated between Kathmandu and Pokhara in the western region of Nepal. [5] The book shows the effect of the elections on the common people of that town and the lives of the people gets entangled with the politics. [6]

Renowned writer Indra Bahadur Rai in his review for Nepali Times lauded the novel and said, " She will be a recurrent success story" about Thapa. [7] Sarah LeVine praised the book as providing "modern perspective" to Nepal in her review for the journal European Bullet for Himalayan Research. [8]

Bhaskar Thapa was a Nepalese-American tunnel engineer who led the engineering of the Caldecott Tunnel Fourth Bore project. He is considered an expert of the New Austrian tunnelling method (NATM). The Caldecott Tunnel passes through California State Route 24 and connects Alameda County and Contra Costa County, California. The project had an estimated cost of $391 million He had presented his tunnel technology programme at Ministry of Physical Infrastructure and Transport (Nepal) and was very keen to work on Kathmandu Terai Fast Track. He is a member of Jacobs Associates, an engineering firm based on California. He has received his PhD on geotechnical engineering from UC Berkeley and an engineering degrees from Carnegie Mellon University. He died from heart failure while playing tennis on June 19, 2013. A plaque rests above the Caldecott Tunnel in Oakland, California in tribute of Bhaskar's work and life.

Ratna Shumsher Thapa the legendary lyricist of Nepal, began writing as a poet in 1951. His creations such as Aankhako Bhaka Ankhaile, Swargaki Rani, Kunjama Gunjiyo, Bho Bho Nasodha, Madhumas Yo Dilko and Ye Kanchha Thattaima, Bichodko Pida, Sero Fero Mero have contributed making Narayan Gopal‘s singing and music everlasting.

Bairagi Kailaka Kabitharu is a 1974 Nepali poetry collection by Bairagi Kainla. It was published in 1974 by Sajha Prakashan. It is the first book of the author. The poems in this collection were later reprinted in a book titled Bairagi Kainla ka Sankalit Kavita with his other poems by Phoenix Books. Kainla is known as progenitor of the Tesro Aayam movement in Nepali literature alongside Indra Bahadur Rai and Ishwor Ballav. He received the Sajha Puraskar for this book.
