Theatre Aurora

Theatre Aurora is an entirely volunteer-run community theatre in Aurora, Ontario, that opened in 1958. The company puts on at least five theatrical productions annually, including one musical, and also rents space to other events, including concerts and performances. The theatre is located on Henderson Drive in Aurora.

History

Theatre Aurora opened in 1958 as the Aurora Drama Workshop. They performed their first show, Tovarich, at the Aurora High School. [1]

In 1973, through an amalgamation with the Aurora Musical Theatre Society, Theatre Aurora was born. In 1974 Theatre Aurora took up residence at its Henderson Drive location through a lease with the Town of Aurora of a former cement factory. Through extensive renovations, members and patrons slowly began to transform the building over the years into the theatre that exists today. [2]

The venue opened in 1926 as the Oriental Theatre, a deluxe movie palace and vaudeville venue. Today the Nederlander presents live Broadway theater and is operated by Broadway In Chicago, currently seating 2,253. The theater house is located in what was the New Masonic office building and both were listed in 1978 on the National Register of Historic Places as New Masonic Building and Oriental Theater. The office building is now a hotel. In 2019, the theater was re-named for impresario, James M. Nederlander, of the Nederlander Organization.

The Paramount Theatre, also known as the Paramount Arts Center, opened in Aurora, Illinois in 1931. It was designed by Rapp and Rapp in the Art Deco style with Venetian elements. Over the years, it has hosted films, plays, musicals, concerts, comedy shows, and other acts. The structure was restored in the 1970s and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1980. It is part of the Stolp Island Historic District.

The Princess Theatre is a two-screen art-house cinema located at 10337 Whyte Avenue in Edmonton's historic Old Strathcona neighbourhood. Mrs Henderson Presents is a musical comedy with music by George Fenton and Simon Chamberlain, with lyrics by Don Black and a book by Terry Johnson. Based on the 2005 film Mrs Henderson Presents, the musical received its world premiere at the Theatre Royal, Bath in 2015 and transferred to the West End's Noel Coward Theatre in February 2016. The film was based on the true story of Laura Henderson and London's Windmill Theatre.

The Band is a jukebox musical with music and lyrics by Take That and a book by Tim Firth. It received its world premiere at the Manchester Opera House, in September 2017, before embarking on a UK and Ireland tour and opened at the Theatre Royal Haymarket at London's West End in December 2018. The band was cast through the 2017 BBC reality television show Let It Shine.
