Malayalam cinema is the segment of Indian cinema dedicated to the production of motion pictures in the Malayalam language, which is widely spoken in the state of Kerala. Malayalam cinema includes the commercial film industry, sometimes known as Mollywood, as well as independent cinema made in Malayalam.
Mohanlal Viswanathan is an Indian actor, film producer, playback singer, film distributor, and director who predominantly works in Malayalam film industry besides also having sporadically appeared in Tamil, Hindi, Telugu and Kannada films. Mohanlal has a prolific career spanning over four decades, during which he has acted in more than 400 films. Mohanlal's contributions to the Malayalam cinema have been praised by his contemporaries in the Indian film industry. The Government of India honoured him with Padma Shri in 2001, and Padma Bhushan in 2019, India's fourth and third highest civilian honours, for his contributions to Indian cinema. In 2009, he became the first actor in India to be awarded the honorary rank of lieutenant colonel in the Territorial Army. Mohanlal was named as one of "the men who changed the face of the Indian Cinema" by CNN.
Madath Thekkepaattu Vasudevan Nair, popularly known as M.T., is an Indian author, screenplay writer and film director. He is a prolific and versatile writer in modern Malayalam literature, and is one of the masters of post-Independence Indian literature. At the age of 20, as a chemistry undergraduate, he won the prize for the best short story in Malayalam at World Short Story Competition conducted by The New York Herald Tribune. His first major novel Naalukettu, written at the age of 23, won the Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award in 1958. His other novels include Manju (Mist), Kaalam (Time), Asuravithu and Randamoozham. The deep emotional experiences of his early days have gone into the making of MT's novels. Most of his works are oriented towards the basic Malayalam family structure and culture and many of them were path-breaking in the history of Malayalam literature. His three seminal novels on life in the matriarchal family in Kerala are Naalukettu, Asuravithu, and Kaalam. Randamoozham, which retells the story of the Mahabharatha from the point of view of Bhimasena, is widely credited as his masterpiece.
Navya Nair is an Indian actress who has appeared predominantly in Malayalam cinema along with a few Kannada and Tamil language films.
Jasmine Mary Joseph, known professionally as Meera Jasmine, is an Indian actress who appears primarily in Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu and Kannada language films. Meera made her debut in 2001 with the Lohithadas film Soothradharan. She went on to star in various commercial and critically successful films in south Indian languages making her one of the successful actresses of the 2000s.
Hariharan is an Indian film director who has directed over 50 Malayalam films. His movies mainly revolve around the cultural and relational aspects of a typical Keralite society. His most notable works include Sharapancharam (1979), Panchagni (1986), Idavazhiyile Poocha Mindappoocha (1979), Amrutham Gamaya (1987), Oru Vadakkan Veeragatha (1989), Sargam (1992), Parinayam (1994) and Pazhassi Raja (2009) which has won him wide critical acclaim. In 2019, he was awarded the J. C. Daniel Award, Kerala government's highest honour for contributions to Malayalam cinema.
Kaalapaani is a 1996 Indian Malayalam-language epic historical drama film written by T. Damodaran and directed by Priyadarshan. Set in 1915, the film focuses on the lives of Indian independence activists incarcerated in the Cellular Jail in Andaman and Nicobar Islands during the British Raj. The ensemble cast includes Mohanlal, Prabhu, Tabu, Amrish Puri, Nedumudi Venu, Sreenivasan, Tinnu Anand, Annu Kapoor, Alex Draper, Sankaradi, and Vineeth. The film was produced by Mohanlal for Pranavam Arts in association with R. Mohan's Shogun Films.

Chakram (transl. Wheel) is a 2003 Indian Malayalam-language action thriller film written and directed by A. K. Lohithadas, starring Prithviraj Sukumaran, Meera Jasmine, Binoy, Vijeesh, and Chandra Laxman.
Karayilekku Oru Kadal Dooram is a 2010 Malayalam film directed by Vinod Mankara, starring Indrajith, Mamta Mohandas, and Dhanya Mary Varghese in the lead roles.

Ithramathram is a 2012 Indian Malayalam-language film directed by K. Gopinathan from a screenplay adapted from Kalpatta Narayanan's novel of the same name. The film takes a closer look into the life of a 38-year-old woman living in a sleepy village in Wayanad, on her death, from the memories of a few persons who were part of her life. The film stars Biju Menon, Swetha Menon and Malavika in pivotal roles. The film was released on 14 September 2012 to mixed reviews. It won the FIPRESCI Award for Best Malayalam Film at the 17th International Film Festival of Kerala.
Joy Mathew is an Indian film and theatre actor. He is also a film director, playwright and screenwriter. He predominantly works in Malayalam cinema.
Left Right Left is a 2013 Indian Malayalam-language political drama film, directed by Arun Kumar Aravind and written by Murali Gopy. Left Right Left revolves around the lives of Jayan, Roy, Sahadevan, Anitha and Jennifer. Released on 14 June 2013, the film was set in three periods – the 60s/70s, the 80s/90s and the present day. It got mostly positive reviews upon release but drew occasional criticism for some of its characters and scenes resembling real-life political leaders and incidents. However, it has gathered a cult status over the years as one of the finest political thrillers ever made in Malayalam. Murali Gopy's performance won him the 61st Filmfare Awards South for The Best Actor in a Supporting Role and Lena Kumar won Kerala State Film Award for the Second Best Actress.Filmicompanion in 2019 included Hareesh Peradi's performance in the Top 100 performances of the decade.
Chunkzz (transl. Buddies) is a 2017 Indian Malayalam-language comedy film directed by Omar Lulu and produced by Vyshak Rajan. It was written by debutants Joseph Vijeesh, Sanoop Thykoodam, and Aneesh Hameed from a story by Lulu. The film stars Balu Varghese, Dharmajan Bolgatty, Ganapathi S. Poduwal, and Vishak Nair in the titular roles, along with Honey Rose. Chunkzz was released in theatres on 4 August 2017. The film was a commercial success at the box office.
Vishak Nair is an Indian actor known for his roles in numerous feature films in Malayalam and Hindi. He made his debut in the 2016 coming-of-age drama Aanandam, which received critical acclaim and made him a household name in Kerala.
Matchbox is a 2017 Indian Malayalam-language romantic comedy film written by Nikhil Anand and Kenny Peruzzi and directed by Sivaram Mony. Starring Roshan Mathew, Vishak Nair, and Drishya Raghunath. The film was produced by Revathy Kalamandhir. It is the debut film of Sivaram Mony. The film was released on 15 September 2017.
Naval Enna Jewel, titled Naval the Jewel in English, is a 2017 Indian drama film co-written, co-produced and directed by Renjilal Damodaran. It was simultaneously shot in Malayalam and English languages. The film revolves around the lives of a mother and daughter who are victims of arabi kalyanam. The film stars Shweta Menon and Reem Kadem, alongside Adil Hussain, Anu Sithara, Alen Matters Cyriac Alencheril, Anjali Nair, Sudheer Karamana, and Paris Laxmi.
Shivaram Mony, is an Indian feature film director, actor and editor who works in Malayalam cinema. He made his directorial debut through Matchbox produced by Revathy Kalamandir owned by G.Suresh Kumar & Menaka. His second feature as a director, editor and a writer was Thi.Mi.Ram which was released on NeeStream OTT platform in April 2021. Thi.Mi.Ram was selected to be included in the Indian Panorama of Chennai International Film Festival 2021. His third feature film is Shubhadinam which was directed and edited by him. Currently he is working on his next feature along with a new generation web series project. He owns and operates his own production house named The Social Scape.
Soothrakkaran is a 2019 Indian Malayalam-language action drama film written and directed by Anil Rraj and produced by Tomy Varghese and Wichu Balamurali. Co-written by Wichu Balamurali, the film stars Gokul Suresh, Niranj Maniyanpilla Raju and Varsha Bollamma in lead roles. The music of the film is composed by Wichu Balamurali and the cinematography is handled by Anil Nair. Original background score by 'Saji Ram'. Jacob Gregory, Lalu Alex and Kailash also appear in important roles. The story revolves around a series of murders that happen in a town, and how the family members of Sreedharan, Prabhakaran (Vijayaraghavan) and Balachandran are entangled in the same. The film was released in India on 8 March 2019.
