This Sporting Life is the second studio album by Wakefield band Skint & Demoralised. The album was and recorded in 2010 and officially released on 2 August 2011 on Heist or Hit Records alongside the band's debut. [1] [2]

In a stark contrast to the band's debut Love, And Other Catastrophes , This Sporting Life was recorded without a budget at their home studio in Sheffield. [4] The album was again produced by MiNI dOG, and this time only featured Abbott and Gledhill as performers. One of the most distinguishing stylistic features is that it features Abbott singing consistently through every track, as opposed to the first album which had spoken word delivery on almost every verse.
Whilst not receiving the same level of national coverage as the first album during the first month of release, This Sporting Life has managed to slowly gather a strong spectrum of positive reviews on smaller websites and blogs. As with their debut, the band's champion Steve Lamacq led the way on his 'Going Deaf For A Living' blog. [1] Lamacq has also given the band heavy coverage on his BBC 6 Music and BBC Radio 2 shows, including a second 'New Favourite Band' feature for Skint & Demoralised on 17 August. [5]
The album received many positive reviews on local sites such as 'Leeds Music Scene', [6] 'The Sheffield Scenester' [7] and 'Carpe Musica' [8] (all of which are based in Yorkshire) as well as a few sites from further afield such as US-based blog 'There Goes The Fear', [9] French site 'Sound of Violence' [10] and German site 'Punk Rock Ist Nicht Tot'. The video for the second single from the album - a free download of opening track 'Hogmanay Heroes' [12] - was premièred exclusively on the Artrocker website [13] ahead of its release in September 2011.
Whilst writing the lyrics to the album, Abbott also wrote a series of short stories which inspired and in turn were inspired by his lyrical ideas. Abbott has cited James Joyce's Dubliners and Alan Sillitoe's Saturday Night and Sunday Morning as the main influence and inspiration for these stories, and many of the lyrics were inspired by the kitchen sink dramas that fuelled the British New Wave of cinema in the late 1950s and early 1960s, such as the film adaptation of Saturday Night and Sunday Morning as well as other classics such as A Taste of Honey , Room at the Top and A Kind of Loving . A booklet called The Franco Files was made available on the band's merchandise site and also at gigs, featuring six short stories - five of which were written alongside the album in late 2010. The booklet is dedicated to Stan Barstow who died a day before the album's release and also attended school in Ossett (Abbott's home town).

The Maccabees were an English indie rock band, formed in 2004 in London. They released four albums: Colour It In in 2007, followed by Wall of Arms in 2009, Given to the Wild which was released on 9 January 2012 and their last album Marks to Prove It released on 31 July 2015. The band announced that they decided to disband in August 2016, with farewell gigs in 2017.
Rose Elinor Dougall is an English singer, songwriter and musician. She was a member of the Pipettes and has performed with Mark Ronson. She also performs and records as a solo artist.
Letters & Colours were an English band from Sheffield, England, who became known for their combination of early 1980s new wave and disco beats. They gained recognition along with the New Yorkshire and nu rave scenes, and groups such as Bloc Party, Interpol, Editors and The Departure. They list The Cure, Depeche Mode and The Smiths as influences and were compared to such groups, as well as Joy Division, Echo & the Bunnymen, Bauhaus, Artery and Comsat Angels. Letters & Colours combined a heavy, repetitive rhythm section with lush, melodic guitar and haunting vocals. This created a bleak sound with a danceable quality, often referred to as "noir pop". The band was formed in 2003 as a two piece, before extending to four members; ultimately splitting in August 2007.
Maths Class were a British band from that formed in 2006 in Brighton, England, and achieved publicity through their Myspace. They have a wide range of influences and have played extensively around the UK and in Europe. They have also toured Japan in September 2008.
Hatcham Social are an English indie pop band. The group first met and formed in New Cross, London in 2006 and have since released a string of singles on indie labels, followed by three studio albums. With the debut album, they made headway in the mainstream media with The Guardian describing them as "irrestistible" and Tim Burgess calling them "a wonderful pop group with the world's coolest drummer."

Skint & Demoralised are a British alternative indie/pop act, fronted by lyricist Matt Abbott from Wakefield, West Yorkshire and produced by David Gledhill from Sheffield, South Yorkshire. Formed in 2007, the band released several records and toured the UK between 2007 and 2013. After spending six years pursuing individual projects, Skint & Demoralised announced a new single, which was released on Fierce Panda in spring 2019.
The Chapman Family were an English indie rock band from Stockton-on-Tees, that formed in 2006. The band's final lineup consisted of Kingsley Chapman, Pop Chapman, Owen Chapman, Kevin James Chapman and Scott Chapman. The band's debut album Burn Your Town was released on 7 March 2011. They were notably part of the "10 Tips for 2009" shortlist published by NME.

Signed to London independent record label Fierce Panda Records, they have subsequently released four albums, Chasing After Ghosts (2011), Hold Fast (2012), Soapbox (2014), and Lucky Ones (2016) along with an extended EP Dreams Of Another Day (2010).
The Skints are an English reggae punk band from London, described by Clash Music as "the torchbearers for modern British reggae music." The Skints mix reggae, ska, dub, punk rock, dancehall, soul, and rap, touring extensively across the UK, Europe and the United States. Their album Swimming Lessons (2019) debuted at number 1 on the Billboard reggae chart. Their original style of music has been described as "tropical punk".

Love And Other Catastrophes is the debut studio album by the Wakefield band, Skint & Demoralised. The album was written in 2007, recorded in 2008 and planned for release in 2009. Full-length promotional copies leaked heavily on the internet over the summer of 2009 and the band were dropped by their old label at the expense of the planned release. However, it was officially released on 2 August 2011 on Heist or Hit Records alongside the band's follow-up.
