John Paul Jones Arena,or JPJ,is a multi-purpose arena owned by the University of Virginia in Charlottesville,Virginia. William Edmondson "Grumble" Jones was a Confederate cavalry general with a reputation for being a martinet to his troopers and fractious toward superiors,but acknowledged to be a good commander. After disagreements of a personal nature with J.E.B. Stuart,Jones's brigade was set to guarding supply lines and unavailable during a crucial juncture of the Gettysburg Campaign when Lee suffered from a lack of capable reconnaissance cavalry. As the personality clash between Jones and Stuart escalated,Jones faced charges for impertinence,and was transferred to separate him from Stuart. Jones was killed leading a counter-attack in the 1864 Battle of Piedmont.
Thomas Quinn Jones is an American actor and a former football player. He was a running back who played 12 seasons in the National Football League (NFL). He played college football for the Virginia Cavaliers,earning consensus All-American honors in 1999. Jones was selected by the Arizona Cardinals seventh overall in the 2000 NFL Draft,and played for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in addition to the New York Jets,Chicago Bears and Kansas City Chiefs. Jeffrey Allen Jones is a former American college basketball player and coach. He was a four-year starter for the Virginia Cavaliers,helping his team to win an NIT title and reach the NCAA Final Four. He became an assistant coach and eventually the head coach at his alma mater,with a tenure of eight years;he then coached the American Eagles for thirteen years;and the Old Dominion Monarchs for eleven years. In total,Jones was a head coach for thirty-two years,amassing a 560–417 (.573) overall record and a winning record with each of his three programs,reaching the NCAA Tournament at each stop—including an Elite Eight run with Virginia in 1995.

Herring initially planned to run for governor,but decided to run for re-election. Herring faced Republican nominee Jason Miyares in the general election. Herring conceded defeat at 5:02 PM EST the following day,November 3. Miyares became the first Cuban-American and Hispanic to be elected to statewide office in Virginia. Miyares was later sworn in on January 15,2022.

Primary elections were held on June 8,2021. It was the first state gubernatorial and legislative election to be held since the passage of several voting rights bills into law by the Democratic trifecta in the 161st Virginia General Assembly,including expansions of early voting,designation of Election Day as a paid state holiday,legalization of automatic and same-day voter registration,the Voting Rights Act of Virginia,and repeal of Voter ID laws.

On the night of November 13,2022,a mass shooting took place at the University of Virginia (UVA) in Charlottesville,Virginia,in which three people were killed and two others were injured. Four of the victims,including the three who died,were members of the UVA football team. The suspect,22-year-old Christopher Darnell Jones Jr.,was later taken into custody and charged with three counts of second-degree murder,as well as three counts of using a handgun in the commission of a felony.
