Santa Clara University is a private Jesuit university in Santa Clara, California. Established in 1851, Santa Clara University is the oldest operating institution of higher learning in California and has remained in its original location for 169 years. The university's campus surrounds the historic Mission Santa Clara de Asís which traces its founding to 1776. The campus mirrors the Mission's architectural style and provides a fine early example of Mission Revival architecture. The university is classified as a "Doctoral/Professional" university by Carnegie Classification.

John Nobili, born Giovanni Pietro Antonio Nobili, (S.J.) was an Italian priest of the Society of Jesus. He was a missionary in the Oregon Territory and later founded Santa Clara College in California, United States.

The Rev. Paul Leo Locatelli, S.J. was an American Jesuit priest, academic and certified public accountant. Locatelli served as the president of Santa Clara University from 1988 until 2008 before becoming chancellor of Santa Clara in 2008. He also held the post of Secretary of Higher Education for the Society of Jesus in Rome.

The Reverend Nicholas Congiato, S.J. was born in Cagliari, Sardinia and entered the Society of Jesus, an order of the Roman Catholic Church, when he was fourteen years of age. After his initial education, he went to Turin, Italy, for advanced studies in philosophy. Fr. Congiato then became Vice-President of the College of Nobles in Turin and held a similar position at the Jesuit College in Fribourg, a city in Switzerland.

Michael Eric Engh is an American Jesuit priest, academic and historian. He served as the 28th President of Santa Clara University in Santa Clara, California from January 5, 2009 to June 30, 2019.

Felix Cicaterri, (S.J.) was the third president of Santa Clara University, California, United States. He was also a one-time rector of Verona's Jesuit College. In 1848 he was made president of the Jesuit College at Vienna now the University of Vienna. After immigrating to the United States, he was a professor of divinity at St. John's College in Fordham, New York. Later he taught philosophy at Georgetown College in the United States. On March 11, 1857, Cicaterri was appointed Santa Clara University's third president and inherited the financial woes created by construction projects. Cicaterri was removed from the University's presidency in 1861 due to Rome's displeasure. In January 1873, he was sent to the College of the Sacred Heart in Woodstock, Maryland, where he died July 15, 1873.

Burchard Villiger, S.J. (1816-1897) was appointed Santa Clara University's fourth president in 1861 after the presidency of Felix Cicaterri. Burchard Villiger had served as the president of two Jesuit Colleges in the east. During his presidency at Santa Clara University in California United States he had built the Science Building, a Jesuit Residence, and the Facade of the Old Mission Church. He served as president till 1865 which coincided with the Civil War. Later Villiger was rector of the College of the Sacred Heart in Woodstock, Maryland where he died in 1903.

Aloysius Masnata, (S.J.) was the 5th president of Santa Clara University, California, United States. He was a Genoese priest. At the age of seventeen he was admitted into the novitiate of the Society of Jesus. After studying philosophy and rhetoric and teaching for a year, he was sent to Vals, France, for the study of theology. After his study in France, he immigrated to the United States with other Jesuits after ordination and completed his fourth year of theology at Georgetown College along with Rev. Salvator Canio and Rev. Joseph Bixio. After his study he spent four years teaching rhetoric at Frederick, Maryland, where he was minister and socius to the master of novices. In 1854 Masnata S.J. sailed to California through Panama and arrived in San Francisco, United States, along with Fr. Charles Messea S.J. and Fr. Anthony Maraschi S.J. In 1865 he was appointed Santa Clara University's fifth president successor of the presidency of Burchard Villiger. In 1868, shy and lacking in proper English, Masnata was replaced by Aloysius Varsi. In 1873 Fr. Aloysius Masnata, S.J. served as the 6th president of San Francisco's St. Ignatius College. On November 18, 1886, Aloysius Masnata died in Los Gatos, California.

Robert E. Kenna, S.J. was appointed Santa Clara University's 9th and 12th president after the presidency of John Pinasco and Joseph W. Riordan. He was first a student, then professor, then president from 1888 to 1893 and again from 1899 to 1905.

Murphy and the 6th president of Loyola Marymount University, Los Angeles, California from 1930 to 1932. After his tenure at Santa Clara and Loyola, he moved to the Vatican and became the assistant for North America to Wlodimir Ledóchowski, 26th Superior General of the Society of Jesus.
