Thomas F. Coleman is a Canadian mathematician and computer scientist who is a Professor in the Department of Combinatorics and Optimization at the University of Waterloo, [1] where he holds the Ophelia Lazaridis University Research Chair. In addition, Coleman is the director of WatRISQ, [2] an institute composed of quantitative and computational finance researchers spanning several Faculties at the University of Waterloo.
Coleman earned his PhD from University of Waterloo in 1979 and followed that up with a two-year postdoctoral appointment in the Applied Mathematics Division at Argonne National Laboratory.[ citation needed ]
From 1981 to 2005, Coleman was a professor of computer science at Cornell University. From 1998 to 2005 he served as the director of Cornell Theory Center, now Cornell University Center for Advanced Computing [3]
From 2005 to 2010, Coleman served as the dean of the Faculty of Mathematics at the University of Waterloo. During his tenure as Cornell Theory Center director, Coleman founded and directed a computational finance academic-industry-government venture located at 55 Broad Street in New York, which shaped into Cornell Financial Engineering Manhattan. Coleman's research is concerned with the design and understanding of practical and efficient numerical algorithms for continuous optimization problems. His work has been applied in many scientific & industrial areas that include finance and risk-management, structural design, logistics and planning, protein structure, data-mining, medical imaging and informatics. [5]
Coleman was selected a SIAM Fellow in 2016 [6] for his contributions to financial optimization, sparse numerical optimization and leadership in mathematical education and industry engagement.
Coleman has published over 80 journal articles in the areas of parallel computing, optimization, automatic differentiation, computational finance, and optimization applications and is the author of three books on computational mathematics.[ citation needed ]
Jack J. Dongarra ForMemRS; is an American University Distinguished Professor of Computer Science in the Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Department at the University of Tennessee. He holds the position of a Distinguished Research Staff member in the Computer Science and Mathematics Division at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Turing Fellowship in the School of Mathematics at the University of Manchester, and is an adjunct professor in the Computer Science Department at Rice University. He served as a faculty fellow at Texas A&M University's institute for advanced study (2014–2018). Dongarra is the founding director of Innovative Computing Laboratory.
Michael Thomas Heath is a retired computer scientist who specializes in scientific computing. He is the director of the Center for the Simulation of Advanced Rockets, a Department of Energy-sponsored computing center at the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign, and the former Fulton Watson Copp Professor of Computer Science at UIUC. Heath was inducted as member of the European Academy of Sciences in 2002, a Fellow of the Association for Computing Machinery in 2000, and a Fellow of the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics in 2010. He also received the 2009 Taylor L. Booth Education Award from IEEE. He became an emeritus professor in 2012.
