Thomas Lankey was the Mayor of Edison,New Jersey,the state's 6th largest municipality by population,with about 108,000 residents. He won the November 2013 election [1] and was sworn in on January 1,2014. He was previously a town councilperson. [2] [3] Soon after taking office,Lankey said he would re-write the town's code of ethics. [4] He won reelection in 2017, [5] winning 58.7% of the vote. [6] He did not seek party backing in the 2021 election and dropped out of there race,endorsing Sam Joshi,who won and replaced him. [7]
Lankey is a lifelong resident of Edison,and a 1978 graduate of Wardlaw-Hartridge School. [8] He has a Bachelor of Science in accounting from the University of Delaware. [9] He is a senior vice president at JFK Health System,and previously served as vice chairman of the board of directors of Magyar Bank. [9]

Sharpe James is an American Democratic politician from New Jersey,who served as State Senator for the 29th Legislative District and was 37th Mayor of Newark,New Jersey. James was the second African American Mayor of Newark and served five four-year terms before declining to run for re-election. He declined to run for re-election to the State Senate in 2007;his term as Senator expired in January 2008. Jun H. Choi is an American entrepreneur and politician and the former Mayor of Edison,New Jersey,a community of over 100,000 people and the fifth largest municipality in the state. He was sworn in on January 1,2006 as the youngest mayor in Edison history and the first Asian American mayor of a major city in New Jersey. Prior to serving as mayor,Choi worked in both business and government. He served as a senior official on education policy at the New Jersey Department of Education where he started the NJ SMART program. He also served in the White House Office of Management and Budget and worked as a management consultant focusing on strategy and technology issues for Fortune 500 US corporations.

Peter J. Barnes III was an American Democratic Party politician,who served in the New Jersey Senate,where he represented the 18th Legislative District until 2016,when he was appointed New Jersey Superior Court judge. He previously served in the General Assembly from 2007 to 2014. Barnes previously served on the Assembly Judiciary Committee,the Appropriations Committee and the Environment and Solid Waste Committee.
The 2009 New Jersey gubernatorial election took place on November 3,2009. Incumbent Democratic Governor Jon Corzine ran for a second term against Republican Chris Christie,Independent Christopher Daggett and nine others,in addition to several write-in candidates. The 2013 New Jersey gubernatorial election took place on November 5,2013,to elect the governor of New Jersey. Incumbent Republican Governor Chris Christie ran for reelection to a second term in office. He faced Democratic nominee Barbara Buono and six others in the general election. Christie was reelected with over 60 percent of the vote and carried 19 of the state's 21 counties,with Buono only winning heavily Democratic Hudson and Essex. Christie became the first Republican gubernatorial candidate to win more than 50 percent of the vote since Thomas Kean's landslide victory in 1985. He won 21% of Black voters and 51% of Latinos. As of 2022,this was the last time a Republican won the governorship of New Jersey or won any statewide election. This is also the last time the counties of Bergen,Burlington,Camden,Middlesex,Mercer,Passaic,and Union voted for the Republican candidate in a statewide election,as well as the last time that Somerset did so in a gubernatorial election.
Ras Jua Baraka is an American educator,author,and politician who is the 40th and current Mayor of Newark,New Jersey. He was previously a member of the Municipal Council of Newark and the principal of the city's Central High School until he took an indefinite leave of absence to run for the 2014 Newark mayoral election,which he won on May 13,2014. Baraka was sworn in as the city's 40th mayor at ceremonies at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center on July 1,2014,for a four-year term. He won reelection in the 2018 mayoral race.
