Song Dong-wook is a former tennis player from South Korea, who represented his native country at the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul. The right-hander reached his highest singles ATP-ranking on April 27, 1987, when he became the number 352 of the world.
Goran Ivanišević defeated Patrick Rafter in the final, 6–3, 3–6, 6–3, 2–6, 9–7 to win the gentlemen's singles tennis title at the 2001 Wimbledon Championships. It was his first and only major title. Ivanišević became the first unseeded player to win the title since Boris Becker in 1985, and the first wild card to win a major. His ranking improved by 109 places following the win, from world No. 125 to world No. 16. Ivanišević had reached the Wimbledon final three times before but lost each time. The final was held on the third Monday of the event in front of a boisterous crowd, after Ivanišević's semifinal against Tim Henman took three days to complete due to rain.
Lawson Duncan is a retired American tennis player. The right-hander reached his highest Association of Tennis Professionals singles ranking on May 20, 1985, when he became world No. 47. His best performance in a grand slam tennis tournament was the 1989 French Open, where he reached the fourth round.
Chile's Nicolás Massú defeated the United States' Mardy Fish in the final, 6–3, 3–6, 2–6, 6–3, 6–4 to win the gold medal in Men's Singles tennis at the 2004 Summer Olympics. In the bronze-medal match, Chile's Fernando González defeated the United States' Taylor Dent, 6–4, 2–6, 16–14. Massú became the only man to win both the singles and men's doubles gold medals at the same Olympic Games. The two medals were Chile's first in men's singles, and Massú's gold plus the Chileans' doubles gold were the only two gold medals for Chile at the Olympics, until shooter Francisca Crovetto's gold obtained at the 2024 Summer Olympics.
