It follows the crew of the starship USS Orville on their episodic adventures.

The series was created and written by Seth MacFarlane who stars as Captain Ed Mercer, who commands the Orville. The series also stars Adrianne Palicki as Commander Kelly Grayson, Mercer's ex-wife. The Orville is set about 400 years in the future and follows the crew of the titular spaceship who face the dangers and wonders of outer space, while dealing with the familiar problems of everyday life.

It streams on Hulu in the United States and on Disney+ internationally. Filming began in October 2019 but was halted due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and production ultimately completed in August 2021. This season is the show's first on Hulu, after airing its previous two seasons on Fox, as well as the first to premiere since The Walt Disney Company's March 2019 acquisition of 20th Century Fox.
