Its county seat and largest city is Akron. The county was formed on March 3,1840,from portions of Medina,Portage and Stark counties. It was named Summit County because the highest elevation on the Ohio and Erie Canal is in the county.

State Route 8 is a road in the U.S. state of Ohio. SR 8 stretches from the eastern junction of Interstate 76 (I-76) and I-77 in Akron to Public Square in Cleveland. It is one of nine routes to enter downtown Cleveland at Public Square. The route's first few miles are as a limited-access freeway from I-76 and I-77,heading north. The freeway section of the highway has 17 interchanges,and is cosigned with SR 59 for a short distance from Perkins Street in Akron to Front Street in Cuyahoga Falls. The freeway portion ends at I-271 in Macedonia.

The Mid-American Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Year is an award given to the most outstanding men's basketball player in the Mid-American Conference (MAC). The award was first given following the 1967–68 season. Four players have won the award multiple times:Tom Kozelko,Ron Harper,Gary Trent and Bonzi Wells. Trent is the only player to have been honored as player of the year three times (1993–95). There have been no ties,nor has any player from the MAC ever won any of the national player of the year awards.
The 2013–14 Ohio Bobcats men's basketball team represented Ohio University during the 2013–14 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. The Bobcats,led by second year head coach Jim Christian,played their home games at the Convocation Center as members of the East Division of the Mid-American Conference. They finished the season 25–12,11–7 in MAC play to finish in third place in the East Division. They advanced to the quarterfinals of the MAC tournament where they lost to Akron. They were invited to the CollegeInsider.com Tournament where they defeated Cleveland State and Wright State to advance to the quarterfinals where they lost to VMI. After the season Christian accepted the head coach position at Boston College.
The 2014–15 Ohio Bobcats men's basketball team represented Ohio University during the 2014–15 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. It was the first year for Saul Phillips as head coach for the program. The team played its home games at the Convocation Center in Athens,Ohio as a member of the Mid-American Conference. They finished the season 10–20,5–13 in MAC play to finish in last place in the East Division. They lost in the first round of the MAC tournament to Western Michigan.

Cleveland Clinic Akron General is a part of the Cleveland Clinic Health System. As the hospital is a teaching hospital,it is affiliated with the Northeast Ohio Medical University and the Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine. The hospital is also an American College of Surgeons verified Level I Trauma Center,the one of two in the region and one of 11 in Ohio. Additionally,the hospital has a rooftop helipad to handle the emergent transport of critical patients to and from the hospital.
