History

Tonson Group was founded in 2006 by Chachchon Ratanarak. The Ratanarak family have substantial holdings in a number of Thai-based companies including Bank of Ayudhya, Siam City Cement, Allianz Ayudhya Capital, Matching Maximize Studio, Medial Studio, Grand Canal Land and Eastern Star Real Estate as well as holding a majority stake in Bangkok Broadcasting & Television Company (BBTV), which operates Thailand's Channel 7.

Tonson Group has diversified investments in Thailand and internationally. Areas of particular focus include property and construction, leisure, media, new media and technology. [1] Tonson Group has a team of senior analysts supporting its investment strategy and operating in an advisory capacity within the Ratanarak Group.

Tonson Group’s office is in Tonson Tower, a prime office building in Ploenchit, Bangkok which, along with neighbouring Ploenchit Tower, is owned by the Ratanarak Group. [2]

Tonson Property, a subsidiary of Tonson Group, is one of the three property development companies in the Ratanarak Group. Tonson Group is developing Tonson Property as a luxury and ultra-prime property brand specialising in contemporary minimalist architecture and design. [3]

Involvement with Rama III District

Chachchon’s father Krit Ratanarak is reported to be taking a lead in the development of Bangkok’s Rama III Riverside district in the central south west of the city. [4] [5] The Rama III area was referred to as the Wall Street of Bangkok before the 1996 financial crisis. [6] Today it is again regarded as an up-and-coming district of central Bangkok amid long-term moves to redevelop the area in the same fashion as London’s Canary Wharf. [6] [7] In 2010, the Rama III area saw the second highest increase in condominium prices in central Bangkok after the central business district. [8]

The Rama III area has ample undeveloped land in large parcels that runs along the river and some of the city’s best transport infrastructure, including the Bhumibol Bridge named after Thailand’s king who inaugurated the new bridge in 2010. [6] [9] [10] Rama III has been identified by the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration as part of a zone to be developed as a model of environmentally friendly mass transit system. [11] The Rama III riverside area was unaffected by the severe flooding that submerged many areas of Bangkok in November 2011. [12]

Tonson Group’s first development in Rama III is an ultra-prime condominium project called The Sathu Residences. [3]

He was removed from the post in October 2016 by Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha who used Section 44 of the interim charter to remove the elected official. The reason given for his ouster was "...because he was involved in many legal cases." He was replaced by Police General Aswin Kwanmuang.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Rama VIII Bridge</span> Bridge in Bangkok, Thailand

The Rama VIII Bridge is a cable-stayed bridge crossing the Chao Phraya River in Bangkok, Thailand. It was built to alleviate traffic congestion on the nearby Phra Pinklao Bridge. Construction of the bridge took place from 1999 to 2002. The bridge was opened on 7 May 2002 and inaugurated on 20 September, the birth anniversary of the late King Ananda Mahidol, after whom it is named. The bridge has an asymmetrical design, with a single pylon in an inverted Y shape on the west bank of the river. Its eighty-four cables are arranged in pairs on the side of the main span and in a single row on the other. The bridge has a main span of 300 metres (980 ft), and was one of the world's largest asymmetrical cable-stayed bridges at the time of its completion.

Chachchon Ratanarak is a Thai businessman belonging to the third generation of the Ratanarak family.

HTMS <i>Sri Ayudhya</i>

HTMS Sri Ayudhya was a coastal defence ship of the Royal Thai Navy. It was in service from 1938 to 1951, being active during the Franco-Thai war in which its sister ship HTMS Thonburi was heavily damaged in the Battle of Ko Chang. Sri Ayudhya later served as flagship of the navy until it was sunk as a result of fighting in the Manhattan Rebellion.

Chuan Ratanarak was a self-made Thai businessman who built one of the largest and most powerful business empires in Thailand. Starting with nothing, Chuan was one of the legendary generation of Chinese merchants in Thailand to achieve success in one generation. By the time of his death in August 1993, age 73, Chuan was at the head of one of the three dominant business families in Thailand - the others being the Sophonpanich family and the Lamsam family - and the business group Chuan had created, the Ratanarak Group, included Thailand's most successful terrestrial broadcaster, a major retail banking and insurance group and the country's second largest cement producer. Comparing Thai and US entrepreneurs, Professor Krishnamra, Director of the Sasin Business School at Thailand's Chulalongkorn University, has said “given the size of the market and the stage of development, Chuan as an entrepreneur was comparable to the Vanderbilts or Rockefellers”. Chuan is the father of Krit Ratanarak and the grandfather of Chachchon Ratanarak.

The year 2014 was the 233rd year of the Rattanakosin Kingdom of Thailand. It was the 69th year in the reign of King Bhumibol Adulyadej, and is reckoned as year 2557 in the Buddhist Era. Significant events include the continuing political crisis which led to a coup d'état on 22 May.
