Glavin played for Partick Thistle, Celtic, Barnsley, Belenenses, Barnsley, Farsley Celtic, Stockport County, Cowdenbeath and St. Louis Steamers. He represented Scotland once, in 1977. After retiring as a player, Glavin managed clubs in English non-league football. His younger brother Tony was also a footballer.

The original St. Louis Steamers played in the original Major Indoor Soccer League from 1979 through 1988. Their home fixtures were held at the St. Louis Arena. The Steamers were popular for a number of years, with average attendance exceeding 12,000 for each season from 1980–81 through 1984–85, and outdrawing the NHL's St. Louis Blues for four consecutive seasons from 1980–81 through 1983–84.

These include the first Major Indoor Soccer League and second Major Indoor Soccer League, National Professional Soccer League and Continental Indoor Soccer League. He was the 1999 NPSL Defender of the Year and also earned one cap with the United States men's national under-20 soccer team in 1987.

The St. Louis Ambush is a professional indoor soccer team based in St. Charles, Missouri. They are the second team to use this name. This version of the Ambush play in the Major Arena Soccer League while the original St. Louis Ambush played in the National Professional Soccer League.

The 2014–15 St. Louis Ambush season was the second season of the St. Louis Ambush professional indoor soccer club. The Ambush, a Central Division team in the Major Arena Soccer League, played their home games at the Family Arena in St. Charles, Missouri.
