The tournament began on July 14 and ended on December 3 with the participation of 11 teams, with a two-legged all play all system. The winner was Cerro Porteño, which gained the right to play the Copa Libertadores 2007 and the national championship final against Libertad (winners of the 2006 Apertura).

The Paraguay national football team represents Paraguay in men's international football competitions, and are controlled by the Paraguayan Football Association. Paraguay is a member of CONMEBOL. The Albirroja has qualified for eight FIFA World Cup competitions, with their best performance coming in 2010 when they reached the quarter-finals. A regular participant at the Copa América, Paraguay have been crowned champions of the competition on two occasions. Paraguay's highest FIFA World Rankings was 8th and their lowest was 103. Paraguay was awarded second place with Best Move of the Year in 1996 for their rise in the FIFA Rankings.

Carlos Alberto Gamarra Pavón is a Paraguayan former professional footballer. He captained the Paraguay national team at international level, playing at centre back, and was for a long time the most capped player in Paraguayan football history, having made 110 international appearances and scoring 12 goals. Throughout his career, Gamarra was known for his leadership, physical strength, ability in the air, heading accuracy, and outstanding tackling skills, which made him one of the most respected defenders in South America.
