Torsten Stein (*1944) is a German jurist. He was the holder of the Chair of European Law and European Public Law at Saarland University as well as the Director of the Europa-Institut, Law Department of Saarland University from 1991 to 2012.

Career

Torsten Stein served in the German Military from 1964-66. Today he is a reserve Officer with the rank of Colonel. From 1966-1970, he studied law at the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg and the Freie Universität zu Berlin. He obtained his doctorate in 1974, the subject of his dissertation having been "Administrative Cooperation in Foreign Affairs". Torsten Stein subsequently joined the Max Planck Institute for Foreign Public and International Law in Heidelberg as a researcher. He was appointed professor at the University of Heidelberg in 1986, after gaining his postdoctoral lecture qualification ("The Political Offence Exception to Extradition: Normative Limits, Practical Application and an Attempt at Re-Formulation") in 1983, while simultaneously continuing his work at the Max Planck Institute. He was the holder of the Chair of European Law and European Public Law at Saarland University as well as the Director of the Europa-Institut, Law Department of Saarland University from 1991 to 2012. Professor Stein was managing director and commentator for the International Committee of the International Law Association, he is chairman of the German branch of the International Law Association as well as honorary treasurer and member of the Executive Council of the International Law Association. He is a member of numerous national, foreign and international legal societies and director of the incorporated association "Friends of Saarland University" as well as chairman of the Hermann and Dr. Charlotte Deutsch Foundation. Moreover, he is chairman of the Heidelberg Society for Comparative Public Law and International Law (Gesellschaft für ausländisches öffentliches Recht und Völkerrecht e.V.), a member of the Board of Trustees at the Academy of European Law in Trier (ERA) and of the Academy council at the European Academy of Otzenhausen. Europa-Institut Place

The Europa-Institut was founded at Saarland University in 1951, long before the signing of the Treaties of Rome, and it is consequently the second eldest institution focused on European Integration. Dieter Nörr was a German scholar of Ancient Law. He studied at the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich from 1949-1953. He worked for a year as a post-doctoral assistant at the Institute for Criminal Law and Legal Philosophy under Karl Engisch. He received his Habilitation at the University of Munich, under Professor Wolfgang Kunkel, in 1959 with a work on Byzantine Contract Law and was promoted to Privatdozent. He then accepted the Chair of Roman and Civil Law at the University of Hamburg. In 1960, Nörr became Full Professor at the University of Münster. After he declined positions at the Universities of Hamburg, Tübingen, and Bielefeld, he returned to the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich as Professor, Chair of Roman Law, and Director of the Leopold Wenger Institute for Ancient Legal History and Papyrus Research. His brother, Knut Wolfgang Nörr, was also a Professor of Legal History, especially Canon Law, at the University of Tübingen.

Sven Simon is a German law professor, politician and member of the European Parliament since 2019. He previously taught International and European Law at Philipps University of Marburg. In the 2019 European Parliament election he was the lead candidate for the Christian Democratic Union Hessen.

Bernd Baron von Maydell (1934–2018) was a German lawyer and secondary school teacher, who specialised in social law.
