Totally Insane was an American hip hop group from East Palo Alto, California, whose members were Mac-10, Ad Kapone and Scoot Dogg. They were signed to In a Minute Records from 1991 to 1995.
Phillip Allen, alias Mac-10 or Ten Dolla, and Adam Hicks, alias Ad Kapone, came together in 1991 and were signed to In-a-Minute Records. What first sparked their success was the release of the single, "No More Mr. Nice Guy." The duo's first album was 1991's Direct from the Backstreet , which peaked at #87 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums. Rapper Scoot Dogg of EPA is also a member, but joined later, and appeared on more than one album; however, he was not on every album. They would later return with two albums, 1993's Goin' Insane and 1995's Backstreet Life which peaked at #61 and #48 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Album chart respectively. Totally Insane would then release Totally Insane in 1998, Da Game of Life in 2001. Ad Kapone of Totally Insane was sentenced to six years in prison in 2001 for possession with intent. While Mac-10 has not yet released an album, Ad Kapone is back and has released The K Word, keeping the TIE (Totally Insane Empire) alive. [1]
Ad Kapone first met T.C. in late 1989 and recorded an album titled "Crazy Shit" in mid-1990. However, their executive producer and good friend Micheal “Mike D” Washington was gunned down in North Oakland before its release. [2] Due to disputes and disagreements with Washington’s older brother the album was unable to be released. Kapone and T.C. instead teamed up with a new executive producer named Manny and recorded "Direct From The Backstreet" in seven days. Following its success in 1993 the two decided to create a follow-up album, "Goin' Insane". [3]
Totally insane got introduced to Jason Blaine - the owner of In-A-Minute Records / Music People Distribution - thru Master P, and were approached by him for distribution. The album "Direct From The Backstreet" was selling so many units they could not press them fast enough and Jason Blaine wanted in on the Totally Insane goldmine. So he offered the group a 5-year, 3-album deal and offered them 30 thousand dollars. They signed late 1991, and would release 3 albums and end their contract in 1995. [3]

West Coast hip-hop began to dominate from a radio play and sales standpoint during the early to-mid 1990s with the birth of G-funk and the emergence of record labels such as Suge Knight and Dr. Dre's Death Row Records, Ice Cube's Lench Mob Records, the continued success of Eazy-E's Ruthless Records, Dr. Dre's Aftermath Entertainment, and others.
G-funk, short for gangsta funk, is a sub-genre of gangsta rap that emerged from the West Coast scene in the early 1990s. The genre is heavily influenced by the synthesizer-heavy 1970s funk sound of Parliament-Funkadelic, often incorporated through samples or re-recordings. It is represented by commercially successful albums such as Dr. Dre's The Chronic (1992), Snoop Dogg's Doggystyle (1993), and 2Pac's All Eyez on Me (1996).
Doggystyle is the debut studio album by American rapper Snoop Doggy Dogg. It was released on November 23, 1993, by Death Row and Interscope Records. The album was recorded and produced following Snoop Doggy Dogg's appearances on Dr. Dre's debut solo album The Chronic (1992), to which Snoop contributed significantly. The West Coast style in hip-hop that he developed from Dre's first album continued on Doggystyle. Todd Anthony Shaw, better known by his stage name Too Short, is an American rapper. A pioneer of West Coast hip hop, Shaw was among the first acts to receive recognition in the genre during the late 1980s. His lyrics were often based on pimping and promiscuity, but also drug culture and street survival; exemplified respectively in his most popular singles "Blow the Whistle" and "The Ghetto." Delmar Drew Arnaud, known professionally as Daz Dillinger or simply Daz, is an American rapper and record producer. The Amazing Jeckel Brothers is the fifth studio album by American hip hop group Insane Clown Posse, released on May 25, 1999, by Island Records, in association with Psychopathic Records. Recording sessions for the album took place from 1998 to 1999. The album is the fifth Joker's Card in the group's Dark Carnival mythology. The album's lyrics focus on the nine circles of hell and the morality of man as he is torn between righteousness and evil. The album's titular Jeckel Brothers are spirits who juggle balls of fire, representing the sins committed during the mortal life of the dead.
David Marvin Blake, better known by his stage names DJ Quik or Da Quiksta, is an American rapper and record producer from Compton, California, known for his production in the G-funk style of West Coast hip-hop. Blake has collaborated with Snoop Dogg, Kurupt, Tupac, Chingy, R. Kelly and Shaquille O'Neal, among others. As a recording artist himself, he is perhaps best known for his 1991 single "Tonite", which within the top 50 of the Billboard Hot 100. Blake's stage name refers to his ability of producing songs in a short period of time.
Earl Tywone Stevens Sr., better known by his stage name E-40, is an American rapper. Stevens is a founding member of the rap group The Click and the founder of Sick Wid It Records. He has released 27 studio albums to date, appeared on numerous movie soundtracks, and has also done guest appearances on a host of other rap albums. Initially an underground artist, his 1995 solo album In a Major Way opened him up to a wider audience. Beginning in 1998, he began collaborating with mainstream rappers outside the San Francisco Bay Area. He rose to higher mainstream popularity in 2006 with his single "Tell Me When to Go", which was produced by Lil Jon.
Esham Attica Smith, known mononymously as Esham, is an American rapper from Detroit, Michigan. Emerging as one of the first ever hip hop artists from Detroit, Esham released his debut studio album, Boomin' Words from Hell, in 1989 at the age of 16. Since then, he has gone on to release 21 studio albums in total and is best known as a representative of the hip hop subgenre horrorcore. In 1992, he co-founded the horrorcore group Natas. "Pac's Life" is a single written and performed by American rappers Tupac Shakur and T.I and R&B singer Ashanti, produced by L. T. Hutton for Shakur's posthumously released album of the same name. Straight Outta Compton: N.W.A 10th Anniversary Tribute is a tribute album to the American Compton-based hip hop group N.W.A, released through Priority Records in 1998 on the tenth anniversary of the group's debut studio album Straight Outta Compton. It is composed of twelve of the thirteen songs in the order identical to the original, covered by N.W.A. members' affiliates, such as Ice Cube's Westside Connection groupmates WC and Mack 10 along with Hoo-Bangin' Records labelmates Allfrumtha I, Boo Kapone, MC Eiht and The Comrads, Eazy-E's protégés Gangsta Dresta and Bone Thugs-n-Harmony, and Dr. Dre's long time partner Snoop Dogg with Snoop's allies C-Murder and Silkk the Shocker, and Aftermath Ent. signee King Tee, as well as several other fellow rappers, including Ant Banks, Jayo Felony, J Dubb, Mr. Mike, Big Pun, Cuban Link and Fat Joe. Production was mostly handled by Ant Banks, as well as Craig B. of Beats by the Pound, Krayzie Bone, Dr. Dre and DJ Yella, with Andrew M. Shack and Marvin Watkins served as executive producers. The album peaked at number 142 on the Billboard 200 and 31 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart in the United States. Music video was shot for the title track.
Reel Life Productions, also known as Gothom Records, is an independent record label based in Detroit, Michigan most associated with the hip hop subgenre horrorcore. The label was founded in 1989 by James H. Smith and his younger brother, rapper Esham. Since its formation, RLP had released much of Esham's discography, and had been home to a number of other artists, including Natas, Dice, Mastamind, T-N-T and The Dayton Family.
Richard Anthony Jones, better known by his stage name Fiend, is an American rapper from New Orleans, Louisiana. His debut studio album, I Won't Be Denied (1995), was released by the local record label Big Boy Records, although he signed with its regional competitor, Master P's No Limit Records to release its follow-up, There's One in Every Family (1998). The latter peaked within the top ten of the Billboard 200 and was followed by his third album, Street Life (1999), which peaked at number 15 on the chart and served as his final release with No Limit.
In-A-Minute Records was a record company founded in 1991 by Jason Blaine. It featured many artists from the underground bay area rap scene including RBL Posse, Andre Nickatina, I.M.P, Pooh-Man, Totally Insane. The label was shut down in 2000.
