A head coach, senior coach, or manager is a professional at training and developing athletes. They typically hold a more public profile and are paid more than other coaches. In some sports, the head coach is instead called the "manager", as in association football and professional baseball. In other sports such as Australian rules football, the head coach is generally termed a senior coach.

Michael Rene Mularkey is a former American football coach and player in the National Football League (NFL). He played college football for the University of Florida, and then nine seasons as a tight end for the Minnesota Vikings and Pittsburgh Steelers of the National Football League (NFL). He has since served as the head coach of the Buffalo Bills, Jacksonville Jaguars and Tennessee Titans, the offensive coordinator for the Steelers, Miami Dolphins and Atlanta Falcons, and the tight ends coach for the Dolphins, Titans, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and Falcons.
Gregg Williams is an American football coach who is the defensive coordinator for the New York Jets of the National Football League. Previously, he was head coach of the Buffalo Bills of the National Football League (NFL), and defensive coordinator of the New Orleans Saints with whom he won Super Bowl XLIV, and the Cleveland Browns, acting as an interim head coach in the 2018 season. Williams is known for running aggressive, attacking 4–3 schemes that put heavy pressure on opposing quarterbacks and for his key role in the New Orleans Saints bounty scandal.
Kenneth Howard Norton Jr. is an American football coach and former player in the National Football League (NFL) who is the defensive coordinator for the Seattle Seahawks. He previously was the defensive coordinator for the Oakland Raiders.
Romeo Crennel is an American football assistant head coach for the Houston Texans of the National Football League (NFL). He has been the head coach of the Cleveland Browns and Kansas City Chiefs, as well an assistant coach for six different NFL teams and four different college teams. He also has over 40 years of coaching experience which has included consistently being employed as a coach for all but two seasons since 1970, only taking the 2009 and 2013 seasons off following both of his tenures as a head coach. His overall record in five seasons as a head coach and three games as an interim head coach is 28–55, with one winning season and no playoff appearances. He has five Super Bowls wins as assistant coach.

He is widely considered to be one of the preeminent defensive coordinators in modern football, as well as one of the greatest defensive coordinators in NFL history. Father of the widely imitated "Tampa Cover 2" defense, Kiffin's concepts are among the most influential in modern college and pro football.
Eric M. Bieniemy Jr. is an American football coach and former player who is the offensive coordinator for the Kansas City Chiefs of the National Football League (NFL). Bieniemy is a former running back who played in the NFL for nine seasons. He played college football for the Colorado Buffaloes and was recognized as a consensus All-American. He was selected by the San Diego Chargers in the second round of the 1991 NFL Draft. Bieniemy served as the offensive coordinator at Colorado before becoming the running backs coach of the Kansas City Chiefs.
Jeff Jagodzinski is an American football coach and former player. Jagodzinski is currently the offensive coordinator and offensive line coach for the Dallas Renegades. He was previously the offensive coordinator at the Georgia State University Panthers football team.
Hardy Otto Nickerson, Sr. is an American football coach and former player. He played as linebacker for four teams over 16 seasons, from 1987 to 2002, in the National Football League (NFL). Nickerson spent the prime of his career with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The hiring of head coaches Sam Wyche and Tony Dungy allowed Nickerson to play in the middle in a 4–3 defense for both coaches; Nickerson played in a 3–4 defense with the Pittsburgh Steelers. While playing in the 4–3, Nickerson went to five Pro Bowls, and was selected for the National Football League 1990s All-Decade Team.
Martin Ashley Bayless is a former American football cornerback/safety who played 13 seasons in the National Football League (NFL). He played college football at Bowling Green State University. After retiring from the NFL in 1998, he joined the Buffalo Bills as a Front Office Executive in 2000. He transitioned into coaching in the college ranks, and he has since held jobs with several professional football organizations.
Bruce Charles Arians is an American football coach who is the head coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers of the National Football League (NFL) and a former player. He was the head coach of the Arizona Cardinals from 2013 to 2017, and also served as offensive coordinator for the Cleveland Browns, Pittsburgh Steelers and Indianapolis Colts. He also coached at the college level, serving as head coach at Temple and as an assistant at Mississippi State and Alabama. Arians is known for his trademark slogan "No risk-it, no biscuit," which encourages aggressive play and risk-taking.
Reginald Wayne Herring is an American football coach and former player who is currently the linebackers coach for the Denver Broncos of the National Football League (NFL). A former linebacker at Florida State University, he began his coaching career in 1981. He has now coached for 36 years across college and the NFL. Herring arrived in Denver to coach linebackers in 2015 after previous stops in the league with Chicago (2014), Houston and Dallas (2008-10). Herring has coached nine linebackers who have made Pro Bowl appearances during their careers, including outside linebackers DeMarcus Ware (9), Mario Williams (4), and Connor Barwin (1), and inside linebackers Zach Thomas (7), Keith Brooking (5), Lance Briggs (7), Brian Cushing (1), Sean Lee (2) and DeMeco Ryans (2). Herring also served as the interim head football coach for the University of Arkansas in the 2008 Cotton Bowl Classic.

In American football, the 3–4 defense is a common defensive alignment consisting of three down linemen and four linebackers. It is a called a "base defense" because it is the default defensive alignment used on "base downs". However, defenses will readily switch to other defensive alignments as circumstances change. Alternatively, some defenses use a 4–3 defense.
