Tribal Theory is a band based in San Diego, California. Formed in 2005, Tribal Theory blends their Pacific Island roots with reggae, rock, ska, and R&B influences [1] to create a sound that spans multiple genres, including Island Reggae, Alternative, and World music. Tribal Theory has been described as the original Urban Reggae band. [2]
The original members - A.J. Blount, Dominic Blas, and Richard Duenas - began their musical journey as dancers in the Polynesian troupe Kaleo O'Nalani and the Guamanian cultural dance group Imahen Taotao Tano. The group initially performed under the name "Last Minute" before evolving into Tribal Theory with the addition of Seuko “Ku” Hawkins, Nico Tuilesu, and Paul Bowen. Several members have Guamanian roots, contributing to the band's multicultural influence. [3] They were influenced by various artists, including Earth, Wind & Fire. [3]
Tribal Theory has performed alongside artists like Steel Pulse, Barrington Levy, The Wailing Souls, Fiji, and Collie Buddz. They have also shared stages with contemporary acts such as SOJA, Katchafire, and Common Kings. [4] The band's self-titled debut EP was released in May 2011, recorded at Quino's Catacumba Studio and mixed by Wendell Ching. Their first full-length album, Hell of a Night, was released in August 2012 and won Best World Music Album at the 2013 San Diego Music Awards. [5]
Over the years, Tribal Theory has headlined concerts across the West Coast, Hawaii, the Polynesian Islands, and Eastern Asia. The band has undergone several lineup changes, with Nico Tuilesu, Peter Cruz, and Rudy Duenas becoming the core members by 2018.[ citation needed ]
Tribal Theory has released multiple albums, including Cali Love (2013) and Reclamation (2016), which featured the songs "Burnin'" and "My Roots." They headlined the Mostraland festival in San Diego in 2022 to help raise money for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. [6]

In its first year, the festival began as a one-day event headlining the Dirty Heads and Tribal Seeds. Today, The California Roots Festival has grown enormously in both size and attendance. It is organized over three full days with more than 11,000 attendees each day. It is described as the largest reggae-rock festival in the world and claims to one of the largest reggae festivals in the United States.

From their founding in 1998 until late 2003, the band quickly made a name for itself in the California indie rock scene, sharing the stage with bands The Jesus Lizard, Jimmy Eat World, Archers of Loaf, and Kelley Deal, and performing at such festivals as NXNW in Portland, SXSW in Austin, CMJ Music Marathon in New York City. Pacific Records is an American, San Diego, California–based music label founded in 2003 as an independent record label and music publisher. Amongst the labels releases are albums by O-Town, Slack Key Ohana and the Guitar Legends television special soundtracks. Helmed by CEO Brian Witkin, a San Diego–based entertainment attorney, the seeds of Pacific Records were planted in 1999, with the opening of Real2Reel Records, at first in his parents' home before relocating in November 2004 to a shop located inside all-ages music venue "The Epicentre" in San Diego's Mira Mesa neighborhood. The shop initially began releasing music under the Real2Reel name, but soon changed to Pacific Records. While the shop closed in June 2007, Pacific Records continued as a label. Witkin signed both local and national talent from the beginning, including San Diego's Get Back Loretta and Virginia based, Life's Only Lesson. A short time after, the imprint was acquired by Wingnut Media Group, Inc, based in Del Mar, California, soon transferred to Georgi Entertainment, LLC. In 2009 Witkin purchased the company back under the holding company New Pacific Group, currently, Pacific Records, Inc. The label includes in house recording studios, engineering marketing and distribution.
