Speed skating is a competitive form of ice skating in which the competitors race each other in travelling a certain distance on skates. Types of speed skating are long-track speed skating, short-track speed skating, and marathon speed skating. In the Olympic Games, long-track speed skating is usually referred to as just "speed skating", while short-track speed skating is known as "short track". The International Skating Union (ISU), the governing body of competitive ice sports, refers to long track as "speed skating" and short track as "short track skating".
Jan Bos is a Dutch former speedskater and sprint cyclist. In the late 1990s he was world champion in speed skating and he competed in the 1998, 2002, 2006 and 2010 Winter Olympics.
Inline speed skating is the roller sport of racing on inline skates. The sport may also be called inline racing or speed skating by participants. Although it primarily evolved from racing on traditional roller skates, the sport is similar enough to ice speed skating that many competitors are known to switch between inline and ice speed skating according to the season.

Rolf Falk-Larssen is a former speed skater. Representing Trondhjems Skøiteklub, Rolf Falk-Larssen made his international debut at the European Allround Championships of 1982 and he was in the lead after three distances. On the final distance, he was paired against Tomas Gustafson, the number two after three distances. With just one lap left to go in that 10,000 m, it seemed that Falk-Larssen would be crowned as the new European Champion, but Gustafson skated an extraordinary last lap, setting a new world record of 14:23.59, and beating Falk-Larssen by 0.021 points. So Falk-Larssen won silver, and he would win a second European Allround silver medal in 1984. Three weeks later, at the 1982 World Allround Championships, Falk-Larssen won bronze.
Eskil Ervik is a Norwegian speedskater. Ervik's best distance is traditionally the 5000-m, where he for several years was among the very best of the world, but his top priority for the most part of his career was to perform optimally in the allround championships. His retirement from top international speedskating was announced in April 2007.
Christine Nesbitt is a Canadian retired long track speed skater who currently resides in Vancouver, British Columbia. She won the gold medal in the 1000 metres event at the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics. She had previously won a silver medal in the team pursuit at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin. She is also the 2011 sprint champion, 2012 1500 metres world champion, three-time world champion for 1000 metres, and three-time world champion for team pursuit. On 4 June 2015 she announced her retirement.
Ivan Aleksandrovich Skobrev is a Russian speed skater.
Henk Angenent is a retired Dutch speed skater, specialising in marathon skating and the longer distances. Angenent won the Elfstedentocht on 4 January 1997, outsprinting favourite Erik Hulzebosch at the finish.
Kurt Wubben is a Dutch marathon speed skater.
Yep Kramer is a Dutch-Frisian long track and marathon speed skater. He is the father of speed skaters Sven Kramer and Brecht Kramer.
Casper Helling is a Dutch speedskater, specialising in marathon skating and the longer distances. On 15 March 2007 at the Utah Olympic Oval in Salt Lake City, Helling skated 41.969 km in one hour, which was the current world record in this event. Helling's result was 300 m better than the previous world record, set by Henk Angenent in March 2004. It was bested by Douwe de Vries who covered 42.252 km in one hour on March 14, 2015. Among his other achievements is a gold medal on the 10,000-m in the Dutch single distances championship for the 2001–2002 season. In recent years Casper Helling has won 3 races of 200 km distance on natural ice: Kuopio, Finland, in 2004, Kuopio, Finland in 2008 and Weissensee, Austria in 2009.
Konrad Łukasz Niedźwiedzki is a Polish long track speed skater who participates in international competitions.
Vitaly Mikhailov is a Belarusian long track speed skater, born in Vitebsk, who participates in international competitions.
Ágota Lykovcán is a Hungarian long track speed skater who participates in international competitions. She was previously known as Ágota Tóth, but after she got married on 10 November 2012, she took her husband's surname. Lykovcán is the current holder of the Hungarian record on 500 metres.
Wang Beixing is a Chinese long track speed skater, specializing in short distances.
Jorien Voorhuis is a Dutch speedskater. Until season 2009/2012 she skated with the VPZ-team. Before season 2010/2011 Voorhuis changed to TVM. Her favorite distances are 1500 and 3000 meters.
Dmitry Sergeyevich Shepel ; born 8 August 1977) is a retired Russian speedskater.
Ice skating marathons are long distance speed skating races which may be held on natural ice on canals, and bodies of water such as lakes and rivers. Marathon is a discipline of speed skating, which is founded in The Netherlands. The races concern speed skating by at least five skaters who start all together on an ice rink with a minimum length of 333.33 meters or on a track:
Remco olde Heuvel is a Dutch former speed skater. His specialty was the sprint and middle distances. After riding for the VPZ skating team for several years, he made the switch to TVM in 2010 for which his younger brother Wouter had been riding for several years. In 2012, he left TVM again. On November 20, 2012, he announced that he would stop skating because he could no longer muster the motivation to continue.
