Truviso (pronounced true-VEE-so) is a continuous analytics, venture-backed, startup headquartered in Foster City, California developing and supporting its solution leveraging PostgreSQL, to deliver a proprietary analytics solutions for net-centric customers. Truviso was acquired by Cisco Systems, Inc. on May 4, 2012. [1] [2]

History

Truviso was founded in 2006 [3] by UC Berkeley professor Michael J. Franklin [4] and his Ph.D. student Sailesh Krishnamurthy, [5] advancing on the research of Berkeley's Telegraph project. [6]

Truviso's TruCQ product leverages and extends the open source PostgreSQL database [7] to enable analysis of streaming data, including queries that combine those streams with other streaming data or with historical/staged data. [8] [9] One public example of Truviso's customers using continuous analytics is the dynamic tag cloud visualization of blog indexer Technorati. [10]

Truviso is one of the pioneers in the continuous analytics space which seeks to alter how business intelligence is done—rather than accumulating data first and then running queries on the data set stored in a relational database or a data warehouse, Truviso has always-on queries which process streaming data as it arrives, continuously. For many queries this approach yields results hundreds or thousands of times faster and more efficiently.

Truviso has received funding from ONSET Ventures, [11] Diamondhead Ventures, [12] and the UPS Strategic Enterprise Fund. [13]

Truviso was acquired by Cisco on May 4, 2012. [14] [15]

Technology

Truviso's analytics approach is to have always-on queries analyzing streaming data. This strategy for handling continuously flowing data is different from traditional business intelligence approaches of first accumulating data and then running batch queries for reporting and analysis.

Truviso has developed a continuous analytics solution to solve the challenges of high-volume, always-on data analysis. Truviso's solution is based on a scalable PostgreSQL platform capable of concurrent query execution, utilizing standard SQL against live streams of data. Truviso's approach enables analysis of heterogeneous data regardless of whether the data is flowing, staged, or some combination of the two.

On May 4, 2010, Truviso announced that the company developed a specific application for web analytics called Visitor Insight & Analytics. [16]

SQLstream is a distributed, SQL standards-compliant plus Java stream processing platform. SQLstream, Inc. is based in San Francisco, California and was launched in 2009 by Damian Black, Edan Kabatchnik and Julian Hyde, author of the open source Mondrian Relational OLAP Server Engine.

The term is used for two different things:

  1. In computer science, in-memory processing (PIM) is a computer architecture in which data operations are available directly on the data memory, rather than having to be transferred to CPU registers first. This may improve the power usage and performance of moving data between the processor and the main memory.
  2. In software engineering, in-memory processing is a software architecture where a database is kept entirely in random-access memory (RAM) or flash memory so that usual accesses, in particular read or query operations, do not require access to disk storage. This may allow faster data operations such as "joins", and faster reporting and decision-making in business.

The name Druid comes from the shapeshifting Druid class in many role-playing games, to reflect that the architecture of the system can shift to solve different types of data problems.

Google Cloud Platform (GCP), offered by Google, is a suite of cloud computing services that provides a series of modular cloud services including computing, data storage, data analytics, and machine learning, alongside a set of management tools. Apama is a complex event processing (CEP) and event stream processing (ESP) engine, developed by Software AG. Apama serves as a platform for performing streaming analytics over a range of high volume/low latency inputs and applications, such as IoT devices, financial exchanges, fraud detection, social media and similar. Users can define data patterns to listen for and actions to take when these patterns are found, which are defined in the provided domain-specific language called the Event Processing Language (EPL). The core Apama engine is written in C++; the process can also optionally contain a JVM for interacting with user created Java code. Apama focuses on high throughput, low latency and memory efficient performance; used in both Intel benchmarks and smaller machines such as the Raspberry Pi, routers and other Edge/IoT devices. It is particularly noteworthy within the CEP space as being one of the earliest projects, a long term market leader, and innovator of many patents.

Kyvos is a business intelligence acceleration platform for cloud and big data platforms developed by an American privately held company named Kyvos Insights. The company, headquartered in Los Gatos, California, was founded by Praveen Kankariya, CEO of Impetus Technologies. The software provides OLAP-based multidimensional analysis on big data and cloud platforms and was launched officially in June 2015. In December the same year, the company was listed among the 10 Coolest Big Data Startups of 2015 by CRN Magazine.

TimescaleDB is an open-source time series database developed by Timescale Inc. It is written in C and extends PostgreSQL. TimescaleDB is a relational database and supports standard SQL queries. Additional SQL functions and table structures provide support for time series data oriented towards storage, performance, and analysis facilities for data-at-scale.
