The Tyne Tees Tigers are an Australian rules football club in North East England, [2] England.
The Tigers were founded in April 2012 from the remnants of the North East England league, which formerly comprised the Durham Saints, Gateshead Miners, Hartlepool Dockers, Middlesbrough Hawks, Newcastle Centurions and the Redcar Bombers.
The 2012 and 2013 seasons saw the Tigers playing as a social team in friendly matches and tournaments in and in 2014 the Tigers played their first competitive season having been voted in as a full member team of the AFLCNE.
In 2016 the Tigers found a new home in Gosforth Sports Association and triumphed against Merseyside Saints and Sheffield Thunder in the AFLCNE Plate competition to take their first League silverware. In 2017 the Tigers repeated this feat with a one sided victory over Merseyside Saints.
From 2018 the Tigers will be playing in the SARFL

The Tees–Wear derby is a football local derby contested between Middlesbrough F.C. and Sunderland A.F.C. who are separated by 2 rivers and 30 miles, in the North East of England. Broadly, Sunderland fans based in the City of Sunderland and further north towards Tyneside focus most of their attention on Newcastle. Middlesbrough is not classed as a major rival in these areas primarily due to the increased distance from Teesside, and the lack of regular interaction with Teessiders. The rivalry of the Tees-Wear derby, however, is much more intense and evenly balanced in southern County Durham, where fans of both clubs live and work close together and interact regularly.
The Northumberland Vikings are an American Football team based in Newcastle upon Tyne, United Kingdom, they compete in the BAFA National Leagues NFC 1 Central, the second level of British American football. They play at Druid Park and were formed in 2014 as the Newcastle Vikings. The Vikings entered the League in 2015 and after early success and a promotion they went on to lose in 2017 Division 1 Play-offs, shortly afterwards they announced that they had merged with BAFA Division 2 side Northumberland Lightning(formed in 2012). The new Vikings adopted the Northumberland title but retained their original colours, logo and continued to operate from Newcastle with the Lightning vacating their base at Ashington to absorb into the Vikings setup in Newcastle.
