History

The guild was formed in 1977 by picture editors working for British national and regional newspapers and picture agencies, with the inaugural meeting on 5 December. [2] Membership was initially restricted to picture editors and their deputies. Later, the membership was opened to other members of the picture desk and then widened to include picture researchers and others whose daily work is involved in editorial photography. [3]

The guild has a membership of more than 100 and is run by a chair and a committee. It meets two or three times a year for social occasions, including a go karting event held at Buckmore Park. [4]

Buckmore Park Kart Circuit

Buckmore Park Kart Circuit is an MSA approved outdoor kart racing circuit located just off junction 3 of the M2 in Chatham, Kent, England. Awards ceremony

The Guild also runs the Picture Editors' Awards. [5] The awards are held in the Honourable Artillery Company headquarters, [6] and attempt to show some of the most newsworthy and important photographs of the preceding year. The judging panel includes representatives from newspapers such as The Daily Telegraph , The Times and The Independent on Sunday . [7] By 2016, the guild was receiving about 2,000 entries which were trimmed to a selection to just over 40. [8]

Honourable Artillery Company British military organization

The Honourable Artillery Company (HAC) was incorporated by royal charter in 1537 by King Henry VIII and is considered the second oldest military corps in the world. Today, it is a registered charity whose purpose is to attend to the "better defence of the realm". This purpose is primarily achieved by the support of the HAC Regiment and a detachment of City of London Special Constabulary. The word "artillery" in "Honourable Artillery Company" does not have the current meaning that is generally associated with it, but dates from a time when in the English language that word meant any projectile, including for example arrows shot from a bow. The equivalent form of words in modern English would be either "Honourable Infantry Company" or "Honourable Military Company".
