UNICEF Meena Media Award, more popularly known as the Meena Media Award, [1] are awards for outstanding contribution on promoting children's issues in print, online and broadcast media since 2005. [2] [3]

Contents

News, articles, features, news photographs published in print/online media and news/programmes broadcast by radio and television that investigate and explore into children's issues or provide healthy entertainment for children are selected for the award.

History

Meena is a fictional character who stars in the South Asian children's television show Meena. The show has been broadcast in Bengali, English, Hindi, Urdu, Nepali, Pashto and Portuguese. [4]

In the previous year, the judges were Selina Hossain, Shahnoor Wahid, Robaet Ferdous, Fahmidul Haque, Jakir Hossain Raju, Qadir Kollol, Ratan Paul, Mithila Farzana, Rafiqur Rahman, Jannatul Mawa and Abu Naser Siddique.

New Age is a Bangladeshi English-language daily newspaper published from Dhaka. It is printed in broadsheet. It is one of the country's most outspoken newspapers, regarded for its anti-establishment editorial policy. Nurul Kabir, a former leftwing activist, is the present editor of the newspaper.

The murder of Sagar Sarowar and Meherun Runi is about the unsolved double murder case of two well-known, married Bangladeshi journalists who were stabbed to death. The case is still open and DNA testing showed that it was possible two men were involved in the murder.

Symon Sadik is a Bangladeshi film actor, assistant director, lyricist, model and politician. His films are predominantly in Dhallywood cinema. He is the current Assistant General Secretary of the Bangladesh Film Artists' Association. He made his debut as a lead in the Bangladeshi film Ji Hujur (2012). And he won Bioscope Borsho-sera awards for Best acting in Poramon (2013). He also won Bangladesh National Film Award for Best Actor for his role in the film Jannat (2018).

Bangladesh Pratidin, literally meaning Bangladesh Everyday, is a daily, Bengali-language independent newspaper in Bangladesh. It was founded on 15 March 2010. Bangladesh Pratidin tops the list of highest circulated dailies in the country out of 345 newspapers published from Dhaka and elsewhere, the information minister told parliament 10 March 2014. Naem Nizam is the editor of Bangladesh Pratidin. Bangladesh Pratidin is a subsidiary of East West Media Group, which is owned by Bashundhara Group. On behalf of East West Media Group, the publisher of the newspaper is Moynal Hossain Chowdhury.

Begum Rokeya Padak, named after Begum Rokeya, is a Bangladeshi national honour conferred on individual women for their exceptional achievement. The award is given by the Ministry of Women and Children Affairs of the Government of Bangladesh. The award recognises the pioneering contribution of an individual in empowering women and raising women's issues.

Sara Hossain is a leading Bangladeshi lawyer. She is a barrister in the Supreme Court of Bangladesh. Hossain is the honorary executive director of the Bangladesh Legal Aid and Services Trust (BLAST), a major legal aid provider. Hossain has been at the forefront of advocating for women's rights in Bangladeshi courts and played a key role in drafting legal reforms to protect women. She was the plaintiff's lawyer in the landmark case of Bangladesh National Women Lawyers Association (BNWLW) v. Bangladesh, in which the Supreme Court supported the judicial practice of referring to international human rights law in the absence of domestic legislation. She is known for her role in challenging fatwa violence when a fatwa is issued to mete out punishment to women and girls. Hossain co-edited 'Honour': Crimes, Paradigms and Violence Against Women with Lynn Welchman.

DBC News is a Bangladeshi Bengali-language satellite and cable news television channel, owned and operated by Dhaka Bangla Media & Communication Ltd. The Chairman of the channel is Iqbal Sobhan Chowdhury, former Media Adviser to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. The Managing Director is Sahidul Ahsan and CEO & Editor in Chief is Monjurul Islam.

On April 17, 2021, Rozina Islam, a senior female reporter of the Bangladeshi daily Prothom Alo, went to the Health Ministry office in the Bangladesh Secretariat for COVID-19 related reporting. She was confined in the ministry for five hours and her cell phones were seized. She was allegedly harassed and assaulted during her detention at the secretariat. She was then arrested from the Ministry for alleged theft and taking photographs of sensitive state documents. Sibbir Ahmed Osmani, Deputy Secretary of the Health Services Division, filed a case against her around midnight of April 17, 2021 with Shahbagh police station under the Official Secrets Act. She was jailed in Dhaka Kashimpur Women's Central Jail amid widespread protests. A virtual hearing for her bail was held on May 20, 2021, later the court announced the decision would be delayed to May 23, 2021, and on that day she was granted a conditional bail after being imprisoned for 7 days.

Meena is a pan-South Asian children's television series created by UNICEF. It has been broadcast in English, Bengali, Hindi, Nepali, and Urdu languages and first aired on television in 1993 on Bangladesh Television. It has since been broadcast on state television in seven SAARC countries, including DD National in India. Ram Mohan, a famous Indian cartoonist, is the creator of the titular character Meena while UNICEF's Neill McKee was the series creator.
