UPCEA - (formerly University Professional and Continuing Education Association) is an American non-profit association for professional, continuing, and online higher education, mostly engaged in adult education. It was established in 1915 [1] and has more than 400 member institutions, and 12,000 individuals. [2]

The association has served its members for over 100 years with conferences and specialty seminars, research and benchmarking information focusing on topics like alternative credentialing, [3] adult (also known as non-traditional) students [4] and the topics which are important for their success, like tracking the graduation and retention rates of non first-time full-time students. [5] Originally started as the National University Extension Association (NUEA), UPCEA was changed to the current name in 2010. [6] Topics which the association focuses on also includes online education, [7] [8] and continuing education through professional networking opportunities and publications. Based in Washington, D.C., UPCEA also builds greater awareness of the vital link between contemporary learners and public policy issues, [9] [10] [11] UPCEA is known for its research and consulting on matters like marketing [12] as well as its work in alternative credentials and digital badging. [13] It is also part of the prestigious Washington Higher Education Secretariat which includes other members, such as the American Council on Education, who serve a significant sector in post-secondary education. [14]

Distance education, also known as distance learning, is the education of students who may not always be physically present at school, or where the learner and the teacher are separated in both time and distance. Traditionally, this usually involved correspondence courses wherein the student corresponded with the school via mail. Distance education is a technology-mediated modality and has evolved with the evolution of technologies such as video conferencing, TV, and the Internet. Credentialing is the process of establishing the qualifications of licensed medical professionals and assessing their background and legitimacy.

In higher education a microdegree, also microcredentials and micromasters, is a qualification focused upon a specified professional or career discipline and typically comprises one or more sources of accelerated educational experiences. Microdegrees are a single manifestation of Competency Based Education (CBE) which seeks to tie credentialing to specific skills sets. Online learning involves courses offered by primary institutions that are 100% virtual. Online learning, or virtual classes offered over the internet, is contrasted with traditional courses taken in a brick-and-mortar school building. The learner experience is typically asynchronous but may also incorporate synchronous elements. Online credentials for learning are digital credentials that are offered in place of traditional paper credentials for a skill or educational achievement. They are directly linked to the accelerated development of internet communication technologies, the development of digital badges, electronic passports and massive open online courses (MOOCs).

EducationDynamics (EDDY) is a privately held higher education management corporation. Founded in 2005, the firm provides market research, advertising agency, multichannel marketing, lead generation, and enrollment management for over 500 US colleges with a particular focus on adult online education. It also partners with private lenders who provide student loans, produces marketing research about adult online students, and hosts the InsightsEDU Conference, formerly known as (CALEM).

Berklee Online, founded in 2001, is the private, nonprofit online school of Berklee College of Music in Boston that offers music courses, certificates, bachelor’s, and master’s degree programs to students worldwide. Berklee Online is accredited by the New England Commission of Higher Education (NECHE). Since its inception, Berklee Online has taught more than 75,000 students from 164 countries. It’s the largest online music school in the world with more than 18,000 annual enrollments in credit-based courses and more than 3.1 million enrollments in massive open online courses through Coursera, EdX, and Kadenze. As of 2021, Berklee Online has nearly 250 courses and instructors.
