USS Finch

Two ships in the United States Navy have been named USS Finch. The first ship was named for the bird and the second ship for Joseph W. Finch Jr.

The first USS Finch (AM-9) was commissioned in 1918 and sunk in enemy action in 1942; salvaged by the IJN and sunk 1945
The second USS Finch (DE-328) was named shortly after the first USS Finch went down in battle. She was commissioned in 1943 and decommissioned in 1947

USS Finch (DE-328) was an Edsall-class destroyer escort in the service of the United States Navy from 1943 to 1946 and from 1956 to 1969. From 1951 to 1954, she was loaned to the United States Coast Guard where she served as USCGC Finch (WDE-428). She was scrapped in 1974.

USS Finch (AM-9) was a Lapwing-class minesweeper acquired by the U.S. Navy for the dangerous task of removing mines from minefields laid in the water to prevent ships from passing. Finch was named for the finch, and is strictly speaking the only U.S. vessel named for such.
