Uche Uzorka is a Nigerian artist. In 2011, he and Chike Obeagu won first place in Nigeria's National Art Competition. [1] Uzorka fuses various media in his work to examine the processes of urban street culture.

History

Uche Uzorka was born in Delta State, Nigeria, in 1974 and graduated from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, in 2001, with a major in painting. In exploring urban street cultural processes, Uzorka's approach encompasses painting, collage, charcoal, and ink drawing. In 2011, Uzorka received First Place in the Nigerian National Art Competition for a work co-produced with Chike Obeago. [2] [3]

Work and career

Uche got a late start in drawing and painting, showing no evident indicators of artistic skill until he was well into his third year of high school. His first sketch was of an uncle he'd never met before, whose resemblance he drew from an old passport photo. He dabbled in sculpture, experimented with forms and clay, and eventually discovered his passion for drawing and painting. Uzorka resigned himself to remaining indoors all day drawing, sketching, and perfecting his technique until he was admitted as an art student at UNN in 1997. As a timid and introverted child and young adult, Uche states that many of his former classmates and friends are still surprised by his success in the art world. [4]

Uche Uzorka: The Organic, his first solo show, was displayed in October 2012 at the Goethe-Institut Nigeria in collaboration with the African Artists' Foundation. Uzorka's second solo exhibition, Line.Sign.Symbol took place in January 2013 at the African Artists' Foundation. [5] [6]

Bruce Onobrakpeya

Bruce Obomeyoma Onobrakpeya is a Nigerian printmaker, painter and sculptor. He has exhibited at the Tate Modern in London, the National Museum of African Art of the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C. and the Malmö Konsthall in Malmö, Sweden. The National Gallery of Modern Art, Lagos has an exhibit of colourful abstract canvases by Onobrakpeya and his works can be found at the Virtual Museum of Modern Nigerian Art, although no exhibitions were showing as of October 2017.

Ibrahim El-Salahi is a Sudanese painter, former public servant and diplomat. He is one of the foremost visual artists of the "Khartoum School", considered as part of African Modernism and the Hurufiyya art movement, that combined traditional forms of Islamic calligraphy with contemporary artworks. On the occasion of the Tate Modern gallery's first retrospective exhibition of a contemporary artist from Africa in 2013, El-Salahi's work was characterized as "a new Sudanese visual vocabulary, which arose from his own pioneering integration of Islamic, African, Arab and Western artistic traditions."

Dele Jegede

Dele Jegede is a Nigerian-American painter, art historian, cartoonist, curator, art critic, art administrator, and teacher. Jegede was a Senior Post-Doctoral Fellow at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC, (1995). He taught at Spelman College, Atlanta as Visiting Fulbright Scholar (1987-1988), when he curated the exhibition, Art By Metamorphosis. Listed in Kelly and Stanley's "Nigerian Artists: A Who's Who & Bibliography," Jegede was Professor and Chair of the Department of Art, Indiana State University, Terre Haute (2002-2005) and Professor of Art at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, (2005-2010). He retired as Professor Emeritus in May 2015. Jegede is recipient of the Distinguished Africanist Award of the University of Texas.

Emeka Ogboh is a Nigerian sound and installation artist best known for his soundscapes of life in Lagos. Trained as an artist, he began working with sounds that characterize cities following an Egyptian multimedia art program. He presents unmodified field recordings from Lagos city life—for instance, its danfo share taxi system—in gallery installations with headphones and speakers. His non-audio work uses iconography from Lagos city life. He participated in the DAAD Artists-in-Berlin Program and 2015 Venice Biennale, and received the 2016 Bremen Böttcherstraße Art Award. His work has exhibited at the Brooklyn Museum, American National Museum of African Art, Menil Collection, Casino Luxembourg, and Kiasma. Critics noted his soundscapes' chaos and complexity, and his focus on recontextualizing rather than transforming the city's sounds.

Polly Alakija is a British muralist, artist and children's book author. Born in Britain, she moved to Nigeria upon marrying her Nigerian husband and most of her works focus on Nigerian-themed concepts. She was an artist in residence for the 2015 Cheltenham Jazz Festival and had a solo exhibition at the Quintessence Gallery, Ikoyi also in 2015. A number of her works are composed of paintings of objects such as Cycle rickshaws called marwa in Nigeria, molue bus and Volkswagen Beetles.
