Ugone della Volta was the second Archbishop of Genoa from 1163 to 1188 after Siro de' Porcello. He was a peacemaker in the city of Genoa, mediating between the various factions and families at a time when it was growing into a Mediterranean power.

The Republic of Noli was an Italian Maritime republic centered on the city of Noli, in Liguria, that existed from 1192 to 1797. Present-day Noli is in the Italian province of Savona. To protect itself from possible attacks and invasions by Savona and Marquisate of Finale, Noli allied in 1202 with the Republic of Genoa in a sort of protectorate, in fact, documents of the time show that the relationship was equal and not one of submission. Thanks to this alliance, the Republic's importance grew to such an extent that in 1239 a diocese was established there by Pope Gregory IX.

Giorgio Adorno was a statesman who became doge of the Republic of Genoa for two years. His father was Adornino Adorno and his mother Nicolosia della Rocca and his brother, Antoniotto, was elected four times as doge of the Republic. He was born c. 1350 but little is known about his youth except that he married Pietrina Montaldo, daughter of the doge Leonardo Montaldo. With her he had nine children, including the future doge Raffaele Adorno.

The Fatimid Caliphate conducted a major raid on the Ligurian coast in 934–35, culminating in the sack of its major port, Genoa, on 16 August 935. The coasts of Spain and southern France may also have been raided and the islands of Corsica and Sardinia certainly were. It was one of the most impressive accomplishments of the Fatimid navy.

On August 10, 2019, guards found the American financier and convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein unresponsive in his Metropolitan Correctional Center, New York, jail cell, where he was awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges. After prison guards performed CPR, he was transported in cardiac arrest to the New York Downtown Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 6:39 a.m. The New York City medical examiner ruled that Epstein's death was a suicide by hanging. Epstein's lawyers challenged the medical examiner's conclusion and opened their own investigation, hiring pathologist Michael Baden.
