The Ukrainian National Women's League of America (UNWLA) is a charitable and cultural organization that aims to unite women of Ukrainian descent and affiliation. Established in 1945, the organization has launched numerous social welfare, cultural, and educational projects aimed at supporting the Ukrainian people both in Ukraine and in diasporas.
It works independently as a charitable and cultural organization and has been granted a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status by the Internal Revenue Service.
Since February 2022, the UNWLA has shifted its focus to humanitarian aid operations in response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine. According to a recent DEMAC report, the UNWLA raised approximately $750,000 for Ukrainian humanitarian aid within one month. [1] The organization continues fundraising and organizing advocacy events to address the Russian invasion.
UNWLA bylaws define the internal organizational structure and the division of responsibilities and duties. [2] The highest legislative body of the UNWLA is the UNWLA Convention, which is held every three years. The organizational structure of the UNWLA consists of a National Board and executive committee, Regional Councils, Branches, and Members at large.

The Ukrainian National Women’s League of America (UNWLA) was founded in 1925, [3] and it stands as the oldest and largest Ukrainian women’s organization in the United States. UNWLA’s stated mission is to provide educational and cultural initiatives while giving humanitarian aid to Ukrainians around the world. The organization is rooted in Christian ethics and claims to be committed to religious tolerance, political neutrality, and the universal protection of human rights. The association aims to inform the free world about the events in Ukraine, while spiritually and materially supporting their homeland and promoting the preservation of Ukrainian national identity, cultural heritage and ethnic traditions in the United States. The UNWLA was established in 1925 by five Ukrainian women's associations in the New York City area. The UNWLA was inspired by a women's organization in western Ukraine in the 1920s and 1930s — the Ukrainian Women's League, or Союз Українок — which also served as the origin for its name. The initial goal was to unite all Ukrainian women's groups in the United States under one umbrella to help their homeland that was struggling for national independence in Eastern Europe, and coordinate efforts to provide long-distance humanitarian aid. Other important goals were to inform the free world about events in Ukraine, to support the homeland both spiritually and materially, and to promote the preservation of Ukrainian national identity, cultural heritage, and ethnic traditions in the United States. While originally focused on alleviating the struggles of Ukraine, fundraising and volunteer work resulted in the building of churches and community centers, improvement of children's education, and the establishment of scholarly and cultural institutions.
The reason for unification was the exclusion of the National Council of Women (NCW) of Ukraine from the International Council of Women at the ICW's General Assembly held in Washington, D.C., in May 1925. The NCW of Ukraine had been a member of the ICW since 1920, and its exclusion from the ICW occurred as a direct result of Ukraine's loss of national sovereignty — a prerequisite for ICW membership.
The name given to the new organization was "Soyuz Ukrayinok Ameryky" — the Ukrainian National Women's League of America.
During the UNWLA's early years, the organization found support from the International Institutes of the YWCA, a program established by Edith Bremer (1865–1964). Its philosophy validates immigrant women's values of ethnic pride and retention of culture. UNWLA members promoted the Ukrainian presence in America with exhibitions of folk art and cultural performances in venues such as the annual Women's International Exposition in New York City. The folk art exhibit installed at the Ukrainian Pavilion at the 1933 Chicago World's Fair became the cornerstone of The Ukrainian Museum collection.[ citation needed ] [5]
In 1948, as the UNWLA gained recognition, the organization became the first ethnic organization in the United States to become an associate member of the General Federation of Women's Clubs (GFWC). Joining the GFWC gave UNWLA the standing needed to participate in national and international events on an equal footing with other American women's organizations. Also in 1948, the UNWLA became a founding member of the World Federation of the Ukrainian Women's Organizations (WFUWO). In 1952, UNWLA was admitted to the National Council of Women of the United States (NCW) of the United States.
UNWLA President Olena D. Lototsky served on the board of directors of the American Federation of International Institutes (1953–1959) and in 1958 was honored as a Woman of Achievement alongside other ethnic and minority group leaders. Later, in 1993, Iryna Kurowyckyj (UNWLA President, 1999–2008) was elected president of the NCW — the first woman of Ukrainian descent to hold this top position of women's representation in the country.[ citation needed ] [6]
On October 3, 1976, the UNWLA opened the Ukrainian Museum in New York City, marking 50 years of work collecting, preserving, and cataloging historical Ukrainian artifacts. [7] This museum was located between 12th and 13th Streets on Second Avenue on the fourth and fifth floors of the building. [7] In 1977 it became an independent entity with its own board and an independent charter. On February 6, 2005, the museum opened a four-story brick-and-glass state-of-the-art facility at 222 E 6th Street, designed by architect George Y. Sawicki. The $9 million building, which was built with money raised by Ukrainians both in New York and around the country, consists of 24,000 square feet, with floors of maple and white stone. [8] The inaugural exhibition celebrated the work of Ukrainian artist Alexander Archipenko and was entitled Vision and Continuity, curated by Yaroslaw Leshko. [9]
The organized International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement is a humanitarian movement with approximately 16 million volunteers, members, and staff worldwide. It was founded to protect human life and health, to ensure respect for all human beings, and to prevent and alleviate human suffering.
The International Rescue Committee (IRC) is a global humanitarian aid, relief, and development nongovernmental organization. Founded in 1933 as the International Relief Association, at the request of Albert Einstein, and changing its name in 1942 after amalgamating with the similar Emergency Rescue Committee, the IRC provides emergency aid and long-term assistance to refugees and those displaced by war, persecution, or natural disaster. The IRC is currently working in about 40 countries and 26 U.S. cities where it resettles refugees and helps them become self-sufficient. It focuses mainly on health, education, economic wellbeing, power, and safety.
Ukrainian Canadians are Canadian citizens of Ukrainian descent or Ukrainian-born people who immigrated to Canada.
Sister Cities International (SCI) is a non-governmental organization (NGO) with the goal of facilitating partnerships between communities within the United States and other countries by establishing sister cities. Sister cities are agreements of mutual support formally recognized by the civic leaders of those cities. A total of 1,800 cities, states, and counties have partnered in 138 countries.
The International Council of Women (ICW) is a women's organization working across national boundaries for the common cause of advocating human rights for women. In March and April 1888, women leaders came together in Washington D.C., with 80 speakers and 49 delegates representing 53 women's organizations from 9 countries: Canada, the United States, Ireland, India, United Kingdom, Finland, Denmark, France and Norway. Women from professional organizations, trade unions, arts groups and benevolent societies participate. National councils are affiliated to the ICW and thus make themselves heard at the international level. The ICW enjoys consultative status with the United Nations and its Permanent Representatives to ECOSOC, ILO, FAO, WHO, UNDP, UNEP, UNESCO, UNICEF, UNCTAD, and UNIDO.
The General Federation of Women's Clubs (GFWC), founded in 1890 during the Progressive Movement, is a federation of approximately 2,300 women's clubs in the United States which promote civic improvements through volunteer service. Community Service Projects (CSP) are organized by local clubs for the benefit of their communities or GFWC's Affiliate Organization (AO) partnerships. GFWC maintains nearly 60,000 members throughout the United States and internationally. GFWC is one of the world's largest and oldest nonpartisan, nondenominational, women's volunteer service organizations. The GFWC headquarters is located in Washington, D.C.
Ukrainian Americans are Americans who are of Ukrainian ancestry. According to U.S. census estimates, in 2021 there were 1,017,586 Americans of Ukrainian descent representing 0.3% of the American population. The Ukrainian population of the United States is thus the second largest outside the former Eastern Bloc; only Canada has a larger Ukrainian community under this definition. According to the 2000 U.S. census, the metropolitan areas with the largest numbers of Ukrainian Americans are: New York City with 160,000; Philadelphia with 60,000; Chicago with 46,000; Detroit with 45,000; Los Angeles with 36,000; Cleveland with 26,000; Sacramento with 20,000; and Indianapolis with 19,000. In 2018, the number of Ukrainian Americans surpassed 1 million.
The Ukrainian Congress Committee of America or UCCA is a non-partisan non-profit national umbrella organization uniting 30 national Ukrainian American organizations in advocating for over 1,000,000 Americans of Ukrainian descent. Its membership is composed of fraternal, educational, veterans, religious, cultural, social, business, political and humanitarian organizations, as well as individuals. Established in 1940, the UCCA maintains local volunteer chapters across the United States, with a national office based in New York City, as well as a Washington, D.C., news bureau, the Ukrainian National Information Service. The humanitarian aid committee, the United Ukrainian American Relief Committee, is headquartered in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
The Carpatho-Rusyn Society is a non-profit cultural organization located in the United States dedicated to promoting Carpatho-Rusyn culture and history. It was established in Pittsburgh in 1994 and is the largest exclusively Carpatho-Rusyn organization in North America with over 3,000 members.
The World Veterans Federation (WVF) is the world's largest international veteran organisation. The federation consists of 172 veterans organizations from 121 countries representing some 60 million veterans worldwide.

The Ukrainian American Veterans is a 501(c)(19) non-profit organization of the United States, composed of Honorably Discharged Veterans of the United States Armed Forces, who are of Ukrainian heritage or descent. The UAV obtained its tax-exempt status from the IRS in 1984 and was incorporated in the State of New York in 1987. The organization is governed by a volunteer National Executive Board (NEB), headed by a National Commander, elected at a National Convention.
The American Friends Service Committee (AFSC) is a Religious Society of Friends (Quaker)-founded organization working for peace and social justice in the United States and around the world. AFSC was founded in 1917 as a combined effort by American members of the Religious Society of Friends to assist civilian victims of World War I. It continued to engage in relief action in Europe and the Soviet Union after the Armistice of 1918. By the mid-1920s, AFSC focused on improving racial relations, immigration policy, and labor conditions in the U.S., as well as exploring ways to prevent the outbreak of another conflict before and after World War II. As the Cold War developed, the organization began to employ more professionals rather than Quaker volunteers. Over time, it broadened its appeal and began to respond more forcefully to racial injustice, international peacebuilding, migration and refugee issues, women's issues, and the demands of sexual minorities for equal treatment. Currently, the organization's three priorities include work on peacebuilding, a focus on just economies, and humane responses to the global migration crisis.
The Ukrainian American Coordinating Council or UACC is a non-partisan not-for-profit national umbrella organization uniting Ukrainian American organizations in advocating for Ukrainian Americans. Council's focus is concentrated in the areas of Cultural Affairs, Business Affairs, Political Affairs and Humanitarian Aid. Its membership is composed of fraternal, educational, veterans, religious, cultural, social, business, political and humanitarian organizations, as well as individuals. Established in 1965, the UACC maintains local all-volunteer chapters across the United States, with a national office based in New York City, as well as a San Francisco, CA. The UACC is a member of the Ukrainian World Congress (UWC), the international assembly of nearly all Ukrainian public organizations in the worldwide Ukrainian diaspora of over 20 million people.
The woman's club movement was a social movement that took place throughout the United States that established the idea that women had a moral duty and responsibility to transform public policy. While women's organizations had existed earlier, it was not until the Progressive era (1896–1917) that they came to be considered a movement. The first wave of the club movement during the progressive era was started by white, middle-class, Protestant women, and a second phase was led by African-American women.
The Woman's Era Club was an African-American women's civic organization founded in Boston, Massachusetts, in between 1892 and 1894 by Josephine St. Pierre Ruffin. The club was the first black women's club in Boston. The organization was especially well known for the conflict caused when Ruffin attempted to desegregate the General Federation of Women's Clubs (GFWC) in 1900.
Dorothea Dutcher Buck was an American clubwoman. She was a president of the General Federation of Women's Clubs (GFWC) from 1947 to 1950.
