Controversies

Vape ban

In 2025, Mariyam "Mandhy" Zubair alleged at an opposition Maldivian Democratic Party rally that Muizzu's father, President Mohamed Muizzu, banned the use of vapes in the country because Umyr was caught using it. [10] This caused online harassment targeting Muizzu. [11]

Aishath Azima Shakoor, the Muizzu family's legal representative, has said that his mother, Sajidha Mohamed, condemned the allegation and announced plans to file a lawsuit against Zubair and MDP chairman Fayyaz Ismail. [10]

The Family Court ruled that Ismail and the MDP can be held liable for the remarks made against Muizzu, which the MDP appealed at the High Court. [12] [13]

Nomination for Sports Awards

After the announcement that Muizzu was nominated for the 2025 Maldives Sports Awards, it prompted mixed reactions online. [14] Some alleged that it was nepotism while others defended Muizzu's record. [14]
